Tho I am disappointed about the screen size and the same case...I then thought about it. Did I buy a new computer for the case? Or the guts? I looked at all my CPU's and they are the same shape. I bought my first Mac (iMac) this year and that was the first "new" style CPU I have purchased since 1995.

The guts are what make this new. Sure, waiting till October messed me up a little, even tho I am a newbie, I think it is worth the wait.:D

I absolutely agree with you!!! With any other Apple computers, folks are happy with new internals and don't really care that it looks the same on the outside. I think more people wanted a new case so their friends could readily identify that they had the 'latest and greatest'. The 4S is going to be a great phone.

Wow at some of the reactions. I believe the 3GS reactions were similar if not more pronounced. I love the iPhone 4 design so I'm happy with the continuation of the design. But seriously... this is nothing to be disappointed about! Almost everything inside the phone has improved:

Better processor
Better GPU
Better camera
Better antenna system
Better battery life for talk time
Whole new operating system
Siri
Better downlink speeds (assuming on AT&T or other GSM based carrier)

The lack of a bigger screen is disconcerting, but if that meant a larger device profile and/or reduced battery life... I will humbly reject those improvements.

In for 2 4S's on Sprint.

Oh and one more thing...
I believe the 3GS didn't wow anyone. But in day-to-day use it became the clear cut winner in the smartphone arena. Probably why it is still the second best selling phone in the U.S. :)

true blacks = more realistic

Resolution and proper color temp are a bigger factor. If you do no beleive me ask a real photographer which screen colors are more accurate. Not to mention apple uses a unique process in which the image does not appear under the glass but on it. Lay an iphone 4 flat next to a droid AMOLED and look at them eye level.

I am no fan boy and the color brightness in which the super amoled looks is great. But the IPS retina is better hands down. Also I have a phone with each so I have spent time with each.

I just wish the screen was bigger.

Honestly, I care nothing for Siri. The other stuff is good, but kind of expected in the very least...no?

Absolutely it was expected but what, exactly did you expect if not this? It's not like Apple were publicly beta testing some amazing new device that they were calling the iphone 5 and then pulled it and replaced it with this 1 day before launch, is it?

It's a mobile phone. It was a mobile phone before, and it still is. There's only so many ways to skin that cat, and the fact of the matter is that the majority of the whiners here would have reached nerdgasm yesterday if a phone with these exact shame specs was announced in a slightly different shaped case and called the "iphone 5". And that's just sad.

Disappointed

First of all, I just don't get all the personal attacks leveled at people who are less than thrilled at the 4s.

Seriously, all of the new features are things that other phones from other manufacturers have had out for a while now. This really does look like a "catch up" phone. The reason I am disappointed is that I expected Apple to leap ahead, not just play catch up.

My personal preference ... I have always thought the iPhone 4 exterior design was terrible. So, maybe that is contributing to my disappointment. I was planning on getting a new phone in February, and I thought it was going to be the phone Apple announced yesterday. Now ... I'll probably wait for the iPhone that should have been announced yesterday.

AT&T says I am not eligible for an upgrade until December 5th, 2011 to get the regular $199/$299 pricing (right now it says $449 and so on). I purchased my iPhone 4 at the beginning of July in 2010. I am the only one on my plan. From as much as I can gather the reason I am not eligible is because about 6 months ago I lowered my minutes and my monthly bill is now less than $100. Do you think if I up my minutes and get my bill back over $100 it would automatically update the upgrade eligibility. Any thoughts?

thoughts on the iPhone 4s

...I've had the 3gs since it came out, and didn't upgrade to the iPhone 4 since the differences weren't enough for me.
600mhz to 800mhz _ 163ppi to 326ppi _ 3mp to 5mp _ gyro
Yes, I'm picky. This just wasn't enough for me to want to upgrade. If you add the 4s's upgrades to the list I'll go for it.
over 1ghz _ 8mp camera _ better antenna system _ faster data speeds (my 3gs got roughly 4.5mbps tethered to my laptop, so I'm expecting at least 7mbps from the 4s) _ Siri voice assistant (eh I'm honestly just 30% happy for that)
extended battery life _ it's a world phone
This plus iOS5 and every previous feature sounds good to me.
Does this make sense to everyone else?

Complete sense.
I held off on the 4 but this is a whole new ball game.
At first I was bummed it wasn't "The 5" but after thinking about it. So what! The 5 would have been a new case design with these guts...so what the hell.

I'm getting one :)

you're making yourself a treat upgrading from 3GS to 4S. The camera/retina display and the faster processing speeds are the only main things that change.

IMO, the best is to know what to do with your old phone. If you sell it to someone, or offer to one of your friends/family member for example, that is worth it.

I realize how SIRI is great, it appears to many like a gadget; but I am sure that it will be built-in in all the phone in one or two years (or maybe in a few weeks! ).
