I just turned on the "dark mode" in El Capitan to get a little insight into how well Apple is doing with respect to customizing the look of the desktop (they get to customize, we just get to watch). I am stunned by the level of their innovationess. You can take that statement how ever you want, but there is only one right answer. Yet another feature to dazzle the masses.

I just made up that work just for this post.

No more at night!

No one wears glasses anymore.

Most important changes coming is for education. Sharing of iPads by students, ability of teacher to monitor progress of each student, easier ability to create class materials.

No question, must needed functionality. If done right, this could be an exciting development.

Not mentioned, but critical, is a substantial upgrade to iBooks as well as iTunes U. At this point they're virtually unsupported products. The kindle app kills iBooks.

It really is about time, but this is not groundbreaking ... just very much needed. It's something that should've been on iOS for a while. You can already download apps with this functionality on Android (such as Twilight). I hope this is as good as f.lux and has customization options.

I've always used the extra low brightness filter that comes with the Accessibility features, under Zoom. With a few tweaks you can turn down the brightness to the absolute minimum with just three presses on the home button. Easy on the eyes.

Fantastic, a completely original and innovative idea from Apple. I can't wait for them to implement this....;)

Apple didn't create the first personal computer.
Apple didn't create the first MP3 player.
Apple didn't create the first smartphone.
Apple didn't create the first tablet.
Apple didn't create the first smartwatch.

Ford didn't create the first automobile.
Microsoft didn't create the first computer operating system.
Google didn't create the first search engine.
Tesla didn't create the first electric car.

It's not about being the first or coming up with an original idea. It's about implementing it best. That's what all of those above have done.

This isn't about Apple coming up with an original idea, it's about implementing f.lux-like functionality in a better way than f.lux does. Having the functionality built-in to the operating system is far better than anything f.lux could do. It means less system resource requirements and better integration. And that's why their implementation is superior to f.lux.

About time.

It's dreadful how abandoned iBooks is. It desperately needs some love.

Looking forward to f.lux on iOS. Love it on the Mac.

How do you know it's superior? Have you tried it even though it's not officially released? I use flux and it works fine on the desktop.

There's nothing superior about Apple these days.

dont call me stupid but whats the difference between this and just dimming the screen at night so its easier on the eyes? lol

It's hard not to call you stupid, when the answer to your question is in the article! :) It's the blue wavelength of light that affects sleep patterns. Dimming the light doesn't do away with the blue light, but changing the color of the screen would.

I'm very excited about this. iOS devices are always the last thing I look at before I go to bed.

Well I'm going the research gone into sleep goes beyond night shift, I am hoping sleep tracking makes it to next Apple Watch.
