So what is the difference between this and the one released just last year?

This new one upgrades the processor to A15 Bionic, starts with 64GB storage (rather than 32GB), and the Apple Remote is now USB-C.

Looks like the $129 starter unit may not have Thread/Matter support, nor an ethernet port.

The A15 isnt really going to add a whole lot when the last one has no issues at all running anything. And the remote is charged every 6 months for me..seems like a crappy upgrade. Guess i can save some money

The 2015 Apple TV 4/HD and 2021 Apple TV 4K were rumoured a year before they launched and seemed to eventually launch with outdated hardware (presumable, it was current when these models were conceived). It seems like Apple has pushed this one out of the door on time rather than sitting on it for a year...

6 months? You must not use yours often. You

It is just another pathetic, incremental update with faster processor. The $129 model is Wi-Fi only, no ethernet, and it is threadless. You have to buy the $149 model to get an ethernet port and thread capability for Homekit. I bet it still won't play Youtube HDR correctly. Plus tvOS 16 will cripple it. Meh...

I just ordered the Fire TV Cube 3rd gen 2022, and it is a decent upgrade to my older Cube. I'm getting really tired of the buggie, suckfest tvOS and Apple's smoke and mirrors updates.

Works fine for me.

I have had an Apple TV since the original in 2007 (sorry Roku...). Complainers don't know how good they have it these days. That said, this is a nice future proofing update and they actually lowered the price. If I am on the market for a new one, I am definitely going for this model.
