Apple is investigating multiple reports from iPhone owners of AirPods randomly disconnecting and reconnecting during calls, MacRumors has learned.

A MacRumors forum thread and a long thread on Apple's Support Communities website have been generated by AirPods users who are regularly experiencing Bluetooth connection dropouts during phone calls, despite the fact that the wireless earphones almost never lose their connection when used to listen to music or anything else. MacRumors forum member protobiont wrote:
At present, the issue appears to be limited to iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus devices, with several users reporting no such problems after upgrading to an iPhone 7. MacRumors was also unable to replicate the problem on Apple's latest handset.

Initial reports suggested the dropout issue only occurs if users also have an Apple Watch paired to their iPhone, but MacRumors was able to replicate the problem with a Fitbit Blaze, suggesting a more general conflict when other Bluetooth devices are also connected.

Unpairing and then repairing the AirPods does not appear to solve the problem, neither does rebooting nor resetting the iPhone. Until Apple offers a solution, users are advised to use only one AirPod for conducting calls, as the dropouts only seem to occur when both earpieces are in use.

My set of AirPods, bought earlier this week, demonstrated same issue with calls AND an issue with music/podcasts. Apple Music or podcasts I'd play would just stop randomly and I'd see the AirPods had totally severed their connection to my iPhone 6s Plus.
A replacement set of AirPods is on its way. Won't hold my breathe about those being "the ones" to end this trouble.
I have the BeatsX. And while those have strangely made my ears ring, even on low volume, I like them too much to return them.

I have the BeatsX and have the same problem of dropping calls and sometimes not even picking them up. Was driving me crazy. At least this forum shows its not me. I did notice music never gets dropped and turning off wifi helps with calls.

I have this issue. I put my Apple Watch into Airplane Mode and the AirPods reconnected to the call. I also read somewhere that using just one AirPod makes this disconnect less likely to happen.

I have a similar experience with a Plantronics BT headset and an iPhone 6. These issues only happen at certain spots in Amsterdam, where (I assume) there is lots of RF pollution. I've always wondered how Wifi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, remote controls, drones etc. all use the same ISM band (2.45 GHz). Sooner or later intereference will become too much for error correction.
Having said that, Bluetooth does make a difference between music (A2DP) and voice calls. Maybe the latter has less available error correction, or an issue in the software-/driver stack? Anyway, the AirPods aren't the only headset with these issues.

I think it's in the 3g/4g radio. This also happens when on Youtube watching vids. I noticed it happens when my cell strength dips or drops.

It's funny. I've watched many of the YouTube reviews of the AirPods, especially the "one month after buying them" reviews.
No mention anywhere of these major connection issues beyond a passing mention of "cutting in and out" here and there.
It's almost like reviewers are afraid of speaking their minds. Weird.

Got my replacement AirPods today via Fedex. A few hours with them on multiple devices running latest non-beta releases of macOS and iOS. My iPhone 6s Plus had the connection issues with calls AND music last time. So far, so good.

I did mention to Apple support that my iPhone, since updating to iOS 10, had been pausing itself like it had a mind of its own. Annoying and mystifying. I thought it was Apple Music just making sure I wasn't forgetting to turn my music off once in a while. I looked this up and decided to force close all apps (tons of them), then do a hard reset on my iPhone/power cycle Apple Watch Series 0. Maybe this contributed to the problems? Although, my previous pair of AirPods wouldn't just pause, they'd disconnect entirely from the iPhone.

Fingers crossed this may have fixed it for me. Usage over coming days will tell or not.

It's been one week with my replacement AirPods. No problems. I had one day with them on my iPhone 6s Plus running 10.2.1 that had the problems with my original pair. And, six days on a new iPhone 7 Plus running 10.2.1. Also have an Apple Watch Series 0. Think I'm out of the woods.

Before and after AirPods, I still do have this strange issue of the Music app pausing on its own, but that's probably for another thread.

Man this is still happening on my 6S plus. Right in the middle of a phone call it drops, goes to the handset, I have to wait 5-10 seconds for it to get back on. Very bad when I'm on a call with a client.

Did you get these replaced because of the dropping issue?

Yes I got them replaced and it resolved the issue. First set was a bum set. Hope that helps.

I have a 7 Plus and have been experiencing the same issue. My friend has an iPhone 8 Plus and has experienced the same issue. It has been happening to both of us since iOS 11 update.

I've been experiencing this issue on both my iPhone 7 Plus and my iPhone X. It really gets on my nerves because I don't have any other wireless headset to use.

I was hoping the upgrade to Bluetooth 5.0 on the iPhone X would solve this issue, but apparently not.

My AirPods never used to drop out, but since iOS 11 they will occasionally randomly disconnect. This leads me to think whatever disconnection issues people are experiencing are Bluetooth issues in iOS 11 and macOS 10.13 (which also now randomly doesn't see my Bluetooth mouse).
