You are, of course, correct. No clearer way to put it. I would hope that Apple would be allowed to maintain some level of locked down capability to the phone, but I’m not hopeful. This won’t affect me in any way because I won’t enable it. My concern is for the millions of folks, millions of families that, having taken steps to lock down their older relative’s computer, will now how to lock down their phone as well.
You assume that the EU will allow that. As for me, if a vendor wants me to use their product for IOS, I will only use it from the Apple store. (btw, my payments to NetFlix are not through the App store. Have been paying NF since 98.

Mmm I love a good terminal.

Wish I could get my hands on this iPhone. The fun things I could do with an iPhone that had root access just has me salivating.

Alas, I'll just have to wait until Apple's forced to enable sideloading next year.

This! Sideloading will get iPhone to another level.

And the best thing is - it is optional. You don't have to sideload anything if you don't want to!

Sideloading != root. They won't have to jump through Apple's approval hoops, but they'll have just the same (or less) access to the system. So sideloaded apps won't do anything an iPhone without sideloading would do.

Sideloading is more about money. The freedom aspect has pretty much sailed. Apple has iOS so locked down that it doesn't much matter where the apps come from.
