I just want to be able to place my icons anywhere that’s not a grid.
So much want!! There was a JB tweak for this I used back on iOS 8-10 that was so nice. It’s something they could do so easily.

Widgets are such a regression. Is Philips Hue expected to retire its old, interactive widget for the new lame one for example? Some apps even have both.

Didn’t Apple kill off Dashboard? How are these Mac widgets different?
These one generate 15-30% commission for Apple. That’s also the reason why there are gaps in the default apps and widgets; these gaps are filled by third party developers and Apple earns commission off sales of those calculator, weather and notes apps/widgets.

I always think that one of the many things that is special about Apple is the way they think and act strategically. Small changes lead unexpectedly but seamlessly to much bigger changes in the future. I say unexpectedly, by that I mean for the rest of the world. Once they make the big reveal, those small changes made years prior suddenly make complete sense.

They also like to nudge things in a particular direction as preparation for new products.

I like thinking about where these things might be heading. And with these non-interactive widgets, I can’t help feeling they have been brought in as part of the AR product that’s coming. Similar with app clips.

Wearing an AR headset, interactive widgets could be really annoying. Widgets that just give information, perhaps contextual to your location, time of day or what you’re looking at, would be great. Having a big library of AR content ready to go from day one would give the new product a huge boost.

They also want to stop people from treating their phone like it's their desktop. I prefer only using the Siri widget for icons. If I want an app I either just used it, go a widget, or I can search for. I die inside when I see icons on someone's desktop. If I was Tim I would fire anyone who brought this point up. It's one of the few things I think we should have control over how other people act.

Now a grid that can have empty spaces is a compromise towards getting rid of them all together. That way you can have icons on the bottom but not the top.

That's hands down the best, but it would be nice if I could hide the tab battery level icon when on the home screen. Clocks are useless. Calander's nice but why can't I have a month view without seeing my days activities? I also like the way the did Apple Music and Podcasts.

It's only half baked on the Mac. On iOS Apple needs to demonetize apps fail to invest in modern features.

I think we need better widget implementation on the Mac. Even on a 13" screen there is plenty of room for widgets to sit on the desktop.

The whole notification panel needs to go. OOSOOM. I don't use the widgets because I forget they are there and most of the content is within Google. The only time I see them is when I have to clean out my notifications - which are also a hot mess of outdated alerts stacked on top of each other.

You can have a month view without seeing your activities:

Apple today sent out email invitations to developers inviting them to join various events focused on specific iOS, iPadOS, and macOS features like widgets and App Clips.

A widget-centric event called "Building Great Widget Experiences" is set to take place on February 1, 2021, and will provide developers with opportunities to learn new techniques for creating useful widgets for their apps. There's a separate event on Monday, February 15 titled "Bring Your iPad App to Mac," and another event called "Building Great App Clip Experiences" that's focused on the App Clips feature introduced in iOS 14.

Developers who have been invited to these sessions are able to ask Apple employees questions, much like the online events that Apple held last year for WWDC.

Apple occasionally hosts these special session events focused on different iOS and macOS features. Last year, for example, Apple hosted an event focused on accessibility features.

I am not a registered developer but I’d like to participate in this Feb 1 event. Can someone please send me a copy of the invite so I can log in? Thanks.

Is this some kind of Joke OR just a slap in the face to App Devs ?

Tim Cook should be trying to take Apple in the Exact Opposite Direction, by promoting & encouraging "Engineering Accomplishments" with their Hardware !

Yeah, yeah. We know what ya doing Apple.. you want to bring (more) devs tightly to ecosystem and charge them % so you can be even richer. Meanwhile you focus your (ours?) trillions on silly features one year at a time, so we can thing of you as "innovative". iOS 7 to 14 was like the same old thing.

How do you get that? Mine shows a blank agenda even when I don't select one.

Is that a third party app? Your calendar looks different than the stock one.
Widgetopia and Widgetsmith are cool
