Great news, I can't believe the Razor was still #1 after all these years I haven't seen anyone with one of those in awhile.

big apple fanboy here. iphone died and went to the apple store for help. they wanted me to come back in 2 days.

i walked over to the at&t store and bought a blackberry bold full price. hope they'll realize something.

oh mannn i remember when the RAZR was the hottest thing around. Now everyone has it. I love my iphone, and it's amazing that so many people have it. I hope that doesn't happen to the iphone

Yeah, you sure showed them. Big Apple fan boy my butt.

I'm pretty dismayed at the polarization and/or vent anger spew in this column by haters, a lot of haters. Waaaaa, no cut and paste, waaaa, no video, waaaa, it doesn't double as a hovercar and teleporter.

I owned a Razor, and it was total crap as an overall experience and phone, that was, of course, my experience with it. My experience with the iPhone as a PDA and all-around great assistant to my day-to-day functions and the people who drool over it and my friends who can't live without theirs tell a very different story from the haters. The iPhone is selling really well, but if we're to believe the negative complainers here, it's all a ruse, it's a fad, it's us, those who love our iPhones, that are delusional. Yeah, right, okay. So despite them selling well they're just this horrible device, we're all brainwashed, and should all just b*tch about Apple like you. Don't count on it, and don't count on Apple's iPhone being a fad. I'll be sure to refer back to this thread in a few years and call out those who are still hanging around with egg on their faces but, by the look at all the newbies, I'm guessing it's just trolling going on.

Actually, you'll probably realize something first.

Apple has ONE phone in their line up. How many other manufacturers have this? Not to decry Apple's success but take it with a pinch of salt when every other phone manufacturer spreads their sales over 20 or so handsets, not to mention this is about domestic (not overall) sales and is I guess referring to the U.S. market, rather than the ROTW, lowly as we are.

I don't see why this matters. In fact, this makes Apple's success even more impressive. They managed to unseat Motorola and RIM who have dozens of models to choose from.
Of course, these other companies may do very well financially, they've lost mindshare and market-share to an upstart company who's first and second try bettered devices that were in their fourth or fifth generation.

As others have mentioned, that the RAZR remained so strong in the American market just indicates that the US really is a backwater in cellphone innovation, but yet the iPhone is really cool device.

Someone else mentioned crashing, I've had mine for more than a year and I've had it crash once. Every so often an application like Safari closes, however that's not really a crash, rather that's part of the memory-handling. Yes, it's annoying, but the phone is doing what it's supposed to do.

This isn't a crash.

I haven't used moto for awhile, but i remember hating the UI of these phones(i had 2 and played with couple of other motos).

My iPhone 3G, on the other hand...

I LOVE IT!

I really feel sorry for those people who hasn't used it (i mean really use it) and prematurely says that it's all a hype.

I suppose everyone has different preferences, but i just can't see how you can not admire what it can do.

I had HTC mogul with Windows Mobile 6 on it and it's like a night and day. NO comparison! I used my uncle's LG Dare and though i didn't say it to his face, it was laughable. Went into a Sprint store and played around with the Instinct and that was also not in the same league.

I'd like to get my hands on perhaps HTC Diamond, G1, and Blackberry Bold to see how they compare with my iphone, but so far, it's not even close.

I can't imagine spending another day with my iphone :)

yeah but you have to buy the gadget and pay for 2 yrs contract!
i wouldn't want that in a down economy!

If you stick with a basic cell phone, like the RAZR, you're still paying $50+ per month. All this does is add a $30 data plan onto it. If you had a RAZR, you'd still be paying $50+ per month. Think about that.

I'm right there with you. Previously, I carried a RAZR (bah!), my iPod, and a small notebook/calendar, but now I just carry my iPhone. In some instances, it's even replaced my laptop, especially with email and light browsing.

And while people talk about the lack of Copy-Paste and MMS, they ignore the incredible advantages that the iPhone offers because of the Apps store. Over the last few weeks, I've downloaded Urbanspoon to search for restaurants, Fieldrunners (an excellent iPhone version of Desktop Tower Defense), and during the presidential election I listened to NPR through the AOL application and looked up polling data on www.fivethirtyeight.com. Try to do that on a RAZR!

The iPhone's hardware is excellent and a joy to use, but the software is where the real game is at. And, there's where Motorola and a host of other companies just cannot compete.
RIM seems to be the only company that understands this.

I totally agree. App Store is a paradise for me. And i love my phone both for work and personal use.

Yeah, but I have 900 minutes now. What if AT&T decides to stop charging me for incoming calls tomorrow?

I'll tell you what happens...my plan suddenly has 450 minutes for the same price!

So really, why should I care? It'll all come out the same in the end.

You are not getting the same deal in the US.
I paid £59 ($100 ish) for my 16gb Iphone 3g.
I pay £45 ($75 ish) for 1,200 minutes(incoming calls are free), 500 texts (incoming is free), unlimited data and wifi subscription to cloud/BTopenzone.

I live in one of the most expensive cities in the world and I am getting a much better deal than majority of US customers.
I only have a landline for broadband and if people here were charged for incoming calls then there would be a huge outcry. I would change my cell number and only give it to family and really close friends. eeek.
I don't know how you guys cope with it!

Only cell phone I didn't want to die

I had a couple of blackberries and a razr - my iPhone is the only cell phone I've owned that I didn't want to throw in a river (the Ohio to be specific).

Easy to use. Fun. Adds to my productivity. Seems like a simply thing to do, but this is the first time I actually don't mind using my cell phone.

BTW - Showed my iPhone to two friends at work - one bought an Iphone over the weekend. Show a blackberry or a razr to someone and I seriously doubt they will run out and buy one. (The second friend is still negotiating with his wife :)

Apple wouldn't care, they are making more money than most of these companies who are selling more phones.

That is actually quite funny. I have my blackberry 8800 for over a year and noone in my office or ANY of my friends went out and bought one.
I've had my Iphone for 7 months and 1 guy in my office has bought one. Another 4 of them are getting them over xmas and 3 of my mates have bought them.

My BB never had that effect.
Saying all that, as a business tool the BB seemed easier for me. Emails were kept localy on my phone so that on the underground I could read through them. I could also reply to them and it would send them when I got service. My Iphone doesn't seem to like that.
I could really use SMS forwarding and copy and paste, but I pray to god that it comes within the next 6 months and then it will be perfect for me.

The iPhone and RAZR were followed by the RIM Blackberry Curve, LG Rumor and LG enV2 in the top 5 ranking.

Some thoughts, bearing in mind that the article was about USA sales only:

The RAZR usually sells about 2 million per quarter.

The iPhone sold 2.4 million last quarter. So it probably just edged out the RAZR, which has held the lead for at least a year and a half.

NPD's survey leaves out corporate RIM sales.

Gotta love the way that survey companies make up headlines to sell their product.

Lots of aapl competitors and spin clowns such as Enderle have their boys posting a lot of crap. They've been doing it for the past year.

Maybe. And of course anyone that dares to criticize holy Jobs/Apple must be spreading FUD. Pathetic!

But, corporate RIM sales are just that, corporate sales. This is measuring the consumer sales of each of those products. If we were to take a look at corporate sales, I'd expect to see RIM and maybe Palm in much higher positions than either Motorola's RAZR or Apple's iPhone. However, if the iPhone is close to RIM in the consumer market, that may tell us where the corporate market will be in a year.

Oh, come'on, it's perfectly allowable to think Enderle's (and others like him) an idiot without ascribing to the Church of Apple.

There's obviously an contingent of starry-eyed Apple freaks who will cheer for anything and there's also a host of smear-masters who take thoughtless shots at Apple, who has offended them by its very existence. But, these people are—to a certain extent—crazy.

However, the comment you replied to was questioning the often relentless hordes of Enderle-bots (like Dittoheads for technology issues) that post silly comments about the iPhone. And, the comment also appeared aimed at many of the companies who boast of their new "iPhone-killer" without understanding what makes the iPhone cool, interesting, and useful.

You responded with an ad hominem so old and grizzled, it owns its own gas-station at the outskirts of Red Rock, Arizona.

Then that should be a part of the headline.

Or it might not. :)

Consider that RIM outsold Apple by two-to-one in the quarter before the one mentioned in the article.

It could just mean that in 2Q everyone was waiting for the iPhone 3G, and in the 3Q everyone is waiting on the Storm / Bold.

Now can we get back to the OS?

Great, iPods and iPhones everywhere. I appreciate these forward-thinking devices, but can we work on the bugs in my $3000 MacBook Pro?

You're in envious position

Then that should be a part of the headline.

If we do that we end up with headlines that start to look like portions of a David Foster Wallace essay. The headline was honest and specific enough, I think, to address the article.

Or it might not. :)

It could just mean that in 2Q everyone was waiting for the iPhone 3G, and in the 3Q everyone is waiting on the Storm / Bold.

Absolutely, but you have to admit that Apple just fell off the turnip truck and they're already giving RIM a run for their money even if it's only for a quarter.

RIM should watch its back. And, Palm should wonder just how they went from being the standard in smartphones to being an also-ran. Furthermore, I think the Storm/Bold from RIM is indicative of this pressure, they can see the iPhone in their rear-view and they're reacting. Ultimately, this is good for consumers to have two sharp companies trying to outdo each other. Apple's got the UI in my opinion, but I'm very interested in RIM's haptic designs.
Regardless, it's going to be fun to watch.
