here's my take on the iPhone. I sure do hope Apple makes something cool, utilizing the click wheel maybe?

iPhone

nice render. i see people posting links of "here's my version of..." and 75% of the time they look like something a high school computer class put together, but that's sharp. it may be a little wishful thinking w/ the 4.1MP camera (or an iPhone at all), but good thought, nice design...

people w/ big thumbs would likely have problems dialing b/c there's not too much space btw numbers on the clickwheel (same prob they have w/ tiny phones now). it would be cool to see an interface that showed a large image of the number on the screen that you're thumb is over before you click it. i think the clickwheel has the ability to do something like that as opposed to traditional buttons. just a thought.

That got me thinking. The clickwheel could have 10 points on it and look much like an old rotary phone, only it would be touch sensitive on those points. Call it the retro-cell phone!

how to dial with a click wheel

That's a great idea. I've been thinking about how the usability of the clickwheel would work on a phone. It's an incredible way to navigate menus and long lists of songs though. Having owned an iPod now for awhile, and trying other mp3 players, it seems to me the best way yet.

4.1 megapixels :), I was wondering if anyone would say anything. Threw that in as a joke.

I'd love an true Apple phone, but it just seems too quick for one to be out in the next few months. Looking at the assorted articles I've seen quotes and hints like (my comments in parentheses):

1. but should viewed as an iPod accessory (it sounds like it might attach to the iPod)

2. "It has to be a phone in the middle-tier of the market, not a $500-tier phone." (with the iPod mini alone costing $249, incorporating a well-made, apple/motorola branded phone would cost much more)

3. mobile phones will be able to fetch songs from Apple Computer's iTunes Music Store and play stereo-quality music (stereo-quality might be a key)

4. "It would be great if we could just figure out a way to bring these two devices together." (again, maybe attach them?)

5. The two referred to the device as a new iTunes mobile music player

With these in mind, is it possible that it's a phone that attaches via usb (or something) to the iPod and can serve as a "stereo-quality" speaker for the iPod that can also hold a couple dozen songs from iTunes for listening to and/or ringtones without the iPod attached? That seems like something that could be designed by the people responsible for applications at Apple along with Motorola.

At any rate, I'd much rather get one of the cool looking phones that were rendered here, but a really portable speaker might be nice.

Coming from a former cingular sales rep..

Doing this phone in CDMA and GSM would be beneficial for the success of iPhone, but I'm not confident CDMA phones would be able to handle the function as well as GSM phones.

I've sold hundreds of GSM phones. I got to play with the Treo 600 before it was released, and told all my customers not to buy the Moto V600 because the sound quality lacked compared to the V400. Just because expensive phones aren't "commonly seen" does not mean they do not sell like hotcakes. For the first 4 months after the V400's release, we were charging 100-200 (depending on rebates) for the phone, and we literally could not keep them in stock. Long time cell phone users eventually get fed up with the free phones and decided to invest in something that won't break every 30 seconds, and would making their cell phone use more convenient and enjoyable.

I agree that the customer base of iTunes looks big enough to persue an iPhone. However, what Apple/Motorola should do is sell the phone WITHOUT a service contract mainly, but of course offer it with the carriers at a discounted rate with service agreement. However, I think the emphasis on marketing should be selling the phone itself with no contract. Sell them unlocked in GSM and CDMA. People won't shell out 400 bucks for a phone if they can't use it with another carrier. A lot of people don't know how to get a phone unlocked. This would also open up the option of someone picking up one with an existing service contract. This way you're not getting locked in for additional years, and you have an excellent unlocked phone to take with you if you wish to change carriers.

Just an option of a former cell phone selling goddess.

Samsung's iPod Killing Phone Concept: "Thor"

A trio of Samsung concept phones have slipped out onto the web which give us a good idea of what to expect from the company in 2005. Code-named "Thor," this phone includes a 3GB hard drive and an iPod-like jog shuttle for navigation. Said to run the upcoming version of Microsoft's Smartphone operating system code-named "Magneto," the GSM phone supports a variety of music and video formats, as well as stereo Bluetooth streaming. It's totally an iPod Phone, and it's yet another reason we should expect a similar product from Apple and Motorola this month.

Details on the other phones in a moment.

iphone

Most of you guys have forgotten some of the basic stuff that would allow mac to dominate the airwaves like being able to switch from gsm to VOIP using airports in your office or home. since apple was the first with airports and such how about that the first cell phone to switch back and forth? Also most of your carriers now do not let you do certin features with out lots of extra cost if even possible. I know that when i first started connceting to the web via bluetooth it was easy now you cant do it becuase tmobile saw that they were loosing money and made all new cell phones take out that peice from the manufacture (unless you get one unlocked form the manufac. it was just another way for them to clain you needed to spend the extra money on a data line. well i beat them and will beat them everytime. so Apple should go where most cant and allow you to do the same for free. also being able to have the itunes download to your phone would be a must since steve is making so much money on that why not keep it up to add fuel to the fire and killing off PEECEE. as far as price goes once you have a Mercedes do you want to drive a TOYota? so who cares about the rest of the world. and one final note as far as mac coming out with a emac for under $500. Great lure them in and then Sucker them into to wanting more...

I don't know about this whole iPhone business. It seems that we might really just see an iTunes music player for Motorola phones.
I really like the idea of an Apple branded phone though. Especially if that is combined with a cooperation with some network provider. (iChat wireless, .Mac syncing, videochat(?))

The iphone (or whatever) was just CONFIRMED on CNBC.

Bill Griffeth was just at the CES interviewing Padmasree Warrior (who is the Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Office for Motorola) at about 12:15 EST on CNBC. As she was showing him two new phones, Bill asked her if the second phone was the new phone that would allow itunes downloads and playback that they are deveolping with Apple. She said that the phone in question was not the device they are developing with Apple. She went on to say that device would be an all new device with a whole new type of user experience (or however she worded it). So there is definitely something brewing in the labs if not closer than that. I wonder if Steve saw the interview. Maybe she is Thinksecret's source. Hmmm...

Only if it were a Symbian (that is, the worlds most popular smartphone OS, not to mention, best ;-)) powered smartphone, otherwise there is really no point IMO. I don't want to carry two devices around: pda + phone.

Actually, the PocketPC OS (the only good thing from Microsoft) is quite good for PDA phones.

I want to see Mac OS X Mobile.

Doubt it

I would not be surprised if the iPhone would look like this upcoming Motorola phone. It was scheduled to be launched in the end of 2004, but still isn't.

It would not be too difficult to implement an iPod interface to this model.

btw this one runs on Linux

Considering you can buy this phone for 399 right now I would tend to doubt it. Maybe it will be a highly modified version but if you visit myworldphone's site it can be purchased today.

iPhone - nothing more than a "just in case" trademark?

Motorola did show off a phone at CES with iTunes playback, and described iPod-like synching. I'm afraid it sounds like the phone shown was just an ordinary Moto phone.

So I'm not hoping for an Apple-designed phone next week, just iTunes playback within a Moto-designed phone with a Moto-designed UI. Basically what Apple said way back when. Still a good business move, but nothing too exciting for me.

"iPhone" seems to be entirely a wishful-thinking creation of rumor sites. SOME phone may well be shown at MWSF, in a music context, but Apple-designed? That would be cool, but I'm increasingly skeptical.

CES

Here's what little we know from CES--courtesy of PC Magazine:

http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=816

A Motorola executive on Thursday previewed an upcoming mobile phone that can play music from Apple Computer Inc.'s iTunes store.

Speaking during a keynote at the International Consumer Electronics Show here, the executive demonstrated the phone, which in many ways mimics the iPod. It syncs with a computer and the iTunes Music Store like an iPod does, and incorporates the iPod interface for navigating and playing digital music, said Ron Garriques, a Motorola executive vice president.

The phone is the first of many Motorola devices that will support iTunes this year, said Garriques, also president of Motorola's personal devices business. He didn't provide product details for the phone or say when it would be available.

First of many? That's old news--but if Apple has an "iPhone" that THEY design, I guess that would be... the second of many? I think there is no iPhone.

As for the "iPod interface"... a wheel would be very cool, but a similar on-screen interface could be done without a wheel.

[Update to story]

Matt Hicks at eWeek reports that Motorola demonstrated an iTunes-compatible mobile phone at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

It syncs with a computer and the iTunes Music Store like an iPod does, and incorporates the iPod interface for navigating and playing digital music, said Ron Garriques, a Motorola executive vice president.

The demo at CES bolsters rumors that an iTunes-compatible Motorola phone would be launched this month, possibly at the Macworld conference and expo that opens next week in San Francisco.

Isn't this more or less gigantic gadget news? And no one has pictures? Gizmodo!? Engadget!? You let me down!

EDIT: Well...no pictures YET. Just to be clear, I'm just being over eager.

hello i'm new to this group all i have to say is iPhone would be cool but really all i care to see honestly is an apple pda maybe iPoda or something iPod/PDA hybrid iPod Video with a slideout or flipout keypad and a mini mac os x for it

I don't think an Apple iPhone is a good idea. I wouldn't buy one, primarily because I wouldn't want every electronic gadget I own to be branded by the same company :D. But I also wouldn't want to pay too much of a premium for a cell phone, and neither do most other people. The most popular cell phones around are those cheap or free Nokia models. Only businessmen/women buy $400 phones.

I am not a businessman - and I only buy the higher end phones. Not sure what you are talking about.

Most of the people I know carry higher-end phones - including teenagers.
