1) DAC and audio out jack

It has its own DAC? Where did you see that info?

I think he was assuming that only digital audio was available through the Lightening port. IIRC, Lightening also carries analog audio, negating the need for a DAC.

Not a big fan of this design. Looks too unstable. Besides, do many people still use docks anyway? That's why this announcement caught me off guard. I thought Apple was done with this. It's a bit overpriced too, but so was the red Apple leather case for my iPhone which has not aged well. I wish they would just come out with inductive charging for the iPhone like the Apple Watch.

Many (not all) of my old 30-pin cables would die on me after about 2 years, and show fraying long before that. So far (a bit over 2 years) I've never had a Lightning cable fail, nor seen any sign of wear. (I do have a Griffin one that's finnicky, but not getting worse.) My family members seem to have had the same experience: 30-pin bad, Lightning good!

Depends on handling, of course. Anything cord can be damaged depending how you treat it.

We have a 1 1/2 year old iPad mini, an iPhone 6 since it came out and and another iPhone 6 which is using the original cable from my iPhone 5. We have never had to replace a cable and the new ones that came with my 5s and 6 are just spares now.

Really? The first one that I got with my iPhone 5 still works fine. But it's only in one place: besides the bed, on the nightstand.

It must be us, we've got four devices between us and I think they are all on their second or third cable. To be honest when the new MacBook was released with usb c I assumed it would be the death of Lightning on iOS within the year but it sounds like it's not the issue I thought it was !

I would not give apple one cent for a product like this that is so late to market.

Car Dock

Just thinking how I could convert this into a dock for use in a car - could have power and audio connected and simply just dock the phone.

Does anyone else have problems with lightning cables? My family seem to get through one a month!

Yup, they always seem to fray, even when I hardly touch or bend them. Ever since I got a Mophie battery case and switched to Micro USB I remember why I liked how cheap and durable they were. The fact they aren't reversible though is so awful after Lightning though.

I know this looks unstable and like it would damage the lightning port. BUT...

For the record, I used an old iHome with a 30 pin connector, with a lightning to 30 pin adapter, with my iPhone 5 for nearly two years without issue. The phone was floating in the air, no back support. The phone was fine, and so was the connector on the adapter. It was even in a case that made the phone slightly heavier than stock. The lightning connector is very, very tough for its size.

I used it with my iPhone 6 for a while too, but eventually I wanted to use a case that didn't work with the lightning to 30 pin adapter, so I started using the other adapter that has a cable. Now my phone lays flat on top of the iHome, but it's still working.

As the full article says "for those users who prefer to keep their desktop environments as Apple-branded as possible, the new iPhone Lightning Dock is a reasonable option that should hopefully remain compatible with new models well into the future."

So whilst it may be "late to market" for the 6 and 6 Plus, it's also early to market for the future versions of iPhone - which arguably makes it the best value Apple-branded iPhone dock launched to date.

Nope. Using the same cable that came with my iPhone 5 on launch day.

I have about 8 genuine Apple lightning cables for various other devices, all perfectly fine

How well does this work with cases? My biggest issue with a lot of cases is only the original Lightning cable fits because the cutout in the bottom of the case is too small.

I hope this is not their solution to the crappy cable that comes with Apple products I've lost count on how may I've replaced.anyone knows if Apple will come up with a better cable?

As for the dock, the new Apple one came too late for my family. After reading terrible reviews of the older Apple dock, and of other replacement ones, I found these from China. They came within ten days, and we love them for the price (compared to the $40 Apple wants for theirs!)<continues...>

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that your USD $7.31 dock with included lightning cable isn't MFi / Made for iPhone certified ;)

If anyone has one of these, and an iPad mini, would they be able to post a picture demonstrating what that looks like - it looks daft with the Air but possibly less so with the mini?

Anyone else notice that on the pictures for the new dock that the last picture appears to be an iPhone 5c but it has Touch ID

But for those users who prefer to keep their desktop environments as Apple-branded as possible

I wonder how many of those people there are?

I also wonder why Apple continues to make most of their accessories and cables exclusively in white, when only a small portion of their products are produced in that color. Why not black, space grey or gold to go with their devices?

Probably not :p

OTOH, I bought three of them for about $22, which saved me $100 over getting the Apple version, which doesn't even come with its own cable. (Add lots more $$$ for that, if you wanted to use the original cable somewhere else, like with a car charger.)

For all that savings, and a nice dock to boot, I'll live without the Apple label tax :D

Here's my Mini on the new iPhone Lightning Dock.
