Hey people. Looking for a civilized discussion in this thread. Ranters... go whine somewhere else

I know. Apple is a thief. They are anti-consumer... I get your point. They are slowly changing in regards to pricing and repair policy. But lets put those topics out of the picture.

The App Store was revolutionary. 30% may be high. Could it be 15%-20%. Sure. But in a way its fair. Apple manages a lot for you. And iOS still commands a large portion of the market, and average users not macrumours will continue to buy iOS. Now, Epic games could have easily done what many other companies have done, which is require you to set up payment on their website. Problem solved.

In a way, its kinda like Spotify, when Apple started opening up Siri apis 4-5 years ago, Spotify was ever slow, and don't get me started on their Apple Watch delay. But forget that. The topic is Epic.

Aside from Samsung, Razer, Oneplus and other top android smartphone people, the reason why iOS will always succeed is their whole deal with simplicity. It just works. The OS is integrated. The hardware is optimized. In the App Store, all apps are available in 1 place so it doesn't ruin user experience. Also it ensures security and quality. Sideloading apps is garbage for iOS. Virus rates, and bugs will increase like crazy. It makes consumers confused – which is their core base for the iPhone. Normal people, or power users who want to deal with no hiccups. The App Store takes care of so much anyway. Be grateful.

I am sure you get my point. Epic is being greedy. They could easily play by the rules. iOS commands the market, and since most paid apps are subscriptions anyway, its 15% after the 1st year - and the $99 may seem expensive, but its Apple. They can command the extra price – and you are ensured good quality control and easy install on your device. That's right. its all done by Apple. Epic is only doing this to fight Apple to pay lower rates. At the end of the day, its Epic that will suffer, and consumers will indirectly pay the price.

For the most part, Apple plays fair with devs. Are they a bit anti-competitive. Sure. But Google does the same, but no one is in up and arms about it. They will always protect their business first – but they brought arcade, and allow regular games in the App Store.

On a side note, I think cloud gaming could work. Shadow PC is allowed after all. I don't know the full details about that, but I think if they had a sort of cut, or assurances of security and privacy, then yeah, it could work. But feel free to comment anyway.

So that's my thoughts. Please comment want to hear more.

I don’t play Fortnite. I just know the kids are mad because they can’t update the game and they can’t play without the update. They are out the money spent in game and whatever stuff they earned in the game. They realized with these kinds of games they don’t really own anything they bought.

I offered to wipe my Samsung S20 and turn it into the family gaming phone and load Fortnite on it. All I heard was how much they can’t stand my Samsung and its “twitchy edges”. They were all playing on iPhone XR’s.

With their friends, they’ve gone back to Minecraft. And in the home, we’ve made a big return to board games.

We have a gaming pc in my office and some gaming consoles but for some reason they all played Fortnite on the iPhone. It was just something to do with friends during the pandemic isolation.

I only really spent money on Animal Crossing Pocket Camp. That game turned out to be a nasty way to disguise gambling. I gave it up. I think we all are learning what a nasty business these kinds of games with IAP’s are and are learning we can move on and live just fine without them.

I think the kids are mad at Apple but they like their iPhones more than they like Fortnite. For now. A lot will depend on how many apps and services try to follow Epic’s example.

In all of this the consumer is the one that loses, those who bought IAP in Fortnite have lost their purchases, those who still want to try it have lost the chance.

Epic and Apple will continue to make $billions.

Yep, it’s really not an ideal situation, I wish Epic had dealt with this better and that Apple didn’t have to remove the game from the App Store. The consumer is now in the middle of all of this.

I don’t game on my phone and really don’t care for Fortnite but I am disappointed at what the consumer is experiencing with this whole situation, it’s really not good.

I think both Epic and Apple could have dealt with this in a way that doesn’t affect the customer, no matter how anyone tries to spin this, it has ultimately lead to a poor user experience for the customer who plays Fortunite on their Apple device.
