I seriously doubt that Apple would be faking demand and intentionally make people wait longer for delivery. Because it is basic human psychology. The longer a person's order is processing the more likely they are to have second thoughts and just cancel the order. Either that or they just get tired of waiting and cancel the order. It is in Apple's best interest to get the phones out as soon as possible, because again Apple doesn't technically get your money till the phone ships.
This is so true, and businesses understand it. I’ve been that person. I preordered something while excited about it. During the wait period, the excitement wore off and I started to think about how I really didn’t it and it wasn’t so practical. Ended up canceling the order.

People are much more likely to hold onto an item they have in hand, even if the excitement wears off during the return period.

I don't believe Apple is faking anything. It comes down to who has what stock available. Some areas have plenty of units of x, while others are bone dry. Its truly a baseless claim to say they are lying about the demand.

If you use Apple.com to follow the trend of what's available and what's going to take time to ship due backorders then ok.

On the Apple website, it says you need to wait 3-4 weeks to order an iPhone 17 Pro Max. You'd think these iPhone's are in huge demand, they are not.
1. I can literally get every color, every storage for the iPhone 17 Pro Max from multiple Apple Store. With the iPhone 15 Pro Max, this was impossible. I had to check everyday for 2 weeks in the Apple Store to get an iPhone 15 Pro Max.
2. There are no huge queue's outside of the Apple Store for people wanting an iPhone 17. With the iPhone 15 Pro Max, there were huge queue's outside the Apple Store every single day for many weeks.
3. It's not because of the iPhone Air, I can get every iPhone Air in every color and in every storage too from multiple Apple Stores.

So how come Apple says online you need to wait 3-4 weeks, but multiple Apple Stores have all the iPhone Air, iPhone Pro Max in every color and every storage available without needing to wait at all.

Apple is simply faking the demand. They can deliver these iPhone 17 Pro max to people who are waiting for 3-4 weeks but they want to create the impression for the people that pre-ordered that these phone's are more special than that they really are.
Tell me you know nothing about retail buying without telling me you know nothing about retail buying.

The stock is probably ring fenced for each retail channel and can’t be swapped without causing major issues. Apple uses just in time production, instead of having them sit in warehouses for long periods of time (if they even had the stock to do so).

Perhaps the aluminium case means they are quicker to produce, who knows. Maybe they upped the air production more than the other 2.

The Apple Store restock situation this year does seem much more limited

I havent seen a 1TB silver Max available anywhere near NYC after launch day

Probably because they made a huge batch, shipped them to Apple stores, and are now having to wait on another huge batch to be finished and sent over?

Help me understand how Apple is faking demand here by stocking up their retail locations first...

What logical fallacy.

With the iPhone 15 launch, there wasn't any stock in any single Apple Store for up to a month. If you didn't order it online, you were screwed.

iPhone 17, people are not rushing to pick it up from multiple Apple Stores, as I can get every iPhone 17 that I want now. They are literally waiting there for someone to go get them, but they are still available. These things are not that in demand like the iPhone 15 was.
The iPhone 15 was launched as the world global supply chain was still reeling.

You’re wrong about people lining up:

From what I can see, the iPhone Pro Max models have basically no in-stock availability in my area (New York City and Connecticut).

What is more surprising is that iPhone 17 models are out of stock as well. I don't remember the base model being out of stock the past several years. Essentially all colors and capacities are not in stock in stores right now. Shipping is into early to mid October.

iPhone Air availability is constrained, but less than the other two models.

Had a look at stock levels here in Sweden, the iPhone air models are available all models and colors, but pro Max models are out of stock any size (normal Pro is in).

It’s pretty simple. Online orders are more popular than buying in-store, and online orders have a completely separate fulfillment process than store purchases. Online orders are shipped from warehouses. Store purchases are just whatever’s on hand in the store. In store demand is lower, so that’s why there aren’t huge queues of people outside the Apple Store, and why there’s more stock. This has been the case for years, and Apple still sells hundreds of millions of iPhones per year.

I live in a metro area of North America with 6 Apple Stores. None of them have a single iPhone 17 in any colour or storage config available.

Checked another metro area with a similar number of stores (have family there could pick up) there was one single "sage" iPhone 17 between all of those stores

Are you all checking for stock in person? Or assuming that there is no stock based off pick up availability on apples site?

I think the OP now realizes there is more to the situation. Perhaps his location was as such at the time but has now changed.

In my area in 12 stores, no iPhone 17 or Pro anywhere, Pro Max only in one color one capacity at two stores, Air fairly well available but not all colors or capacities.

Went into my local Apple Store today to pickup a 17 Pro. None in stock, of course… there were also no regular 17’s or Air’s either, lol.

Typically ordering for pickup has been the best method. But I wonder if some stock is going to walk-in customers first this year considering how dry the supply seems to be online
