With today's update of the MBP you can't help but notice that with a base price of $1799 to get a "Pro" notebook that Apple is trying to widen the gap between it's notebook lines.
If you look across Apple's MacBook products you will see prices that don't warrant the type of performance you are getting and require major comprises for users if they want to save money and go with a cheaper machine.
The display on the MBA is garbage, one port on the MB makes it extremely impractical, and as a result people have been moving into the "Pro" range in order to get a notebook they feel is capable with regards to today's specs and doesn't require you to make major life changes to use.
This is why when I see people freaking out about the prices to get into the "New" MBP it is warranted only because there is no other option for most users. You may not be a "Pro" user but you can't live with the other options Apple is giving you, so you have to buy a "Pro" machine.
This is why I feel that there are going to be some major shifts in Apple's MacBook product lines in the upcoming months in order to clean up the lineup.
We hopefully will see a $999 price point MacBook laptop with a 13" screen that can handle 90% of user's needs and does not comprise on screen quality, ports, and performance. The current MacBook can live on (maybe a rename? - not likely but still) as the ultra portable with specs that warrant the $1299 price point.
In a dream world but not really, I don't see Apple going below $999 as that would be so un-Apple of them and I don't see them keeping the MacBook Air alive as we've had this same form factor since 2011, believe it or not.
Fall will be here before you know it, but in my opinion, what Apple really needs is some Spring cleaning.
