That is what I thought too, I'm having a hard time believing that apple will go with a punch hole next year, also it feels silly that they used a notch on the MacBook Pros but no Face ID 
I do believe this has now become apples iconic trademark.
The notch never really bothered me it's only a small part of the screen. Just like no USB c charger dosent bother me at all.
I will quote this post they will get rid of the notch as we would have USB C on the iPhone LOL Remember the MacBook Pro has been the same 2016 when they launched MacBook Pro Touch ID and Touch Bar 2021 was the year they launched the MacBook Pro with a new screen

They will overhaul the iPhone but believe their Face ID is extremely secure that it may fail to apples standard under glass. It’s not an indicator but it seems they have embraced the notch , there is a notch on a MacBook Pro and not on the ipad.

Small price to pay for secure Face ID. I’ll take that over a low quality hole punch or under display nonsense.
Nothing wrong with the XS, but you’re missing out on a lot of advancement by turning your back and crossing your arms over this considering you’re using an older, larger version.
I realize I’m probably in the minority when I say I actually like the look of the notch.
Doesn't bother me in the least. I don't even notice the notch and have never figured out why it's such a big deal to some.
Speed increase, camera upgrades (xs camera is fine for how little I take pictures), and smaller notch means nothing as they don’t take advantage of the extra space.
I’d rather wait for these upgrades with a true redesign.
I don't give a flying f*** about the notch. But I DO want the fugly camera boil gone.
The big ass triple lens monstrosity on the back is what Apple has embraced.
what notch - actually never notice it on my 11 pro and now 13 pro. Asked my wife about it on her 13 pro max and she hadn't noticed it
I don't understand why people even believe this rumor. Going to a "hole punch" design with the iPhone 14 would imply that Apple has either found a way to put all the Face ID sensors under the display or ditched Face ID altogether. Neither are very likely.
Even the most cutting edge phones with under screen cameras make it evident that we're still a long way from high-quality under display technology. Their image quality is terrible and instead of a notch, you now have an area with a low pixel density so that the sensors can "see through" the display. I can't see Apple going for that type of solution when the notch works perfectly fine as is.
And I agree, Apple going with the notch on the MacBook only seems to reinforce this. They don't see getting rid of it as a design priority. They've even sort of embraced it as branding.

For people who hate the notch, what do you want Apple to do?
The hole punch still takes away part of your screen. Is a circle really better than a rectangle?
The only other option is to make the screen slightly less tall, which is basically just a “really wide notch” if you think about it. That, or put the camera on an external dongle. 🤦♂️

Hard to say when Apple will change anything. Notch doesn't bother me although if they eventually remove it I wouldn't mind. I would rather have a notch than a hole punch that's for sure.
