Apple is Permanently Closing Three U.S. Stores in June

I live just south of the Escondido mall, but rarely go to it. It's old, has a ton of unruly kids, and has no real appeal to adults with money (except Target and we have one closer anyway).

I bought some Apple stuff at that store.

It is in a great location. Should convert 1/3 of land to apartments, and the other part to a bit more modern stores with better security. It still could be great hang out spot.

I’ve been in the escondido Starbucks last year when my NASA team had to make a stop during the bus ride to work in my internship business trip for the team to get breakfast and coffee. It’s quite an old area too but that target there is nice.
 
Even though the Apple Store seemed to be doing a decent amount of business, the Trumbull Mall has been declining for a while. Incidents involving robberies and firearms at the mall haven't exactly helped, either.

I used to live north of Escondido and can remember when "North County Fair" was brand new. About the only reason I go to that mall is has the last Red Robin in North County, with the Encinitas, Del Mar Heights and UTC RR's closed. The mall with the Carlsbad Apple Store seems to be doing OK, though not as busy as it was 20 years ago. I suspect a good portion of the foot traffic there is generated by the restaurants.

The Apple store in Carlsbad doesn't carry much in the way of Mac oriented accessories any more, which probably reflects on the relative sales volume of the iPhone with respect to the Mac. I do find it convenient for ordering from the Apple on-line store - in store pick-up means not having to worry about porch pirates

It's acceptable (and expected) to have a certain number of one-off, local stores. But having too many is a sign that the mall can't get or keep larger chain stores that have more stable financials, so they resort to renting out to any local business that can pay a reduced rate. This is how you end up with nail salons, massage centers, and other "low-rent" businesses. Apple doesn't play that.

Update: In a statement to MacRumors, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) Union said that it is "outraged" by Apple's decision to close the Towson store, and will be exploring legal options to hold Apple accountable.

Typical Union behavior! The Mall is bust and no-one is going there - just what the hell are they suing over? LOL! I hope they lose.

It's never good when people lose their jobs, but sometimes it is totally unavoidable.

I did look over a few things about it and chamber of commerce in townson said the mall and the Apple Store doesn’t have any history of slowing down even post covid

I do not think being unionized or not made any difference to Apple’s decision. Many stores have left TTC since 2020. Crime has skyrocketed in this area with new developments built nearby. This mall used to be very, very busy, but the pandemic shown everybody can be comfortable living, working and shopping from home (or anywhere, actually), many won’t go out for shopping any longer. Add to the fact MD living costs are climbing and just as happening at NY and CA, people with money are moving away to more economically friendly states, this store has become irrelevant.

Which is why the news said unionizing isn’t a factor. But the crime forcing the stores to close in the mall is affecting Apple in terms of closure.

I live about 15 minutes from Towson, and their Chamber of Commerce is delusional. You can do some searches in local news and see teenage gangs, fights, even shootings have grown in count at the mall. Almost every major retailer has left the mall in the last 6 months. Nobobody goes there any more, it’s just not considered safe. Apple is well-justified to leave.

That’s literally really bad.

I don’t even believe the chamber of commerce lady talking about it in the news too.
