Amazing how people here support a trillion dollar company blindly.

Hopefully, one day, it's eventually realized that a megacorp never loves you back.

Megacorps, even if we enjoy some of their products, are not our friends and don't care about us in the slightest.

In this case it appears the union screwed up. Why should Apple be nice. The employees voted the union bosses made their play, but it was short. Apple has no obligation to fill the gaps in a faulty written contract.

I feel for those employees. But they entrusted their well being to another advocate.

According to reports, the collective bargaining agreement guarantees first right of refusal for employees to transfer if Apple opens a new store within 50 miles of Towson. Apple is not opening a store within 50 miles of Towson - therefore, Apple is honoring their terms.
Again, that’s Apple’s position. The union disagrees per the original post. I’m not taking sides.

Well the union did not drag apple into court. That’s a sign that merely disagreeing is the union is not putting its money where their mouth is. Talk is cheap.

I guess - but if the reports are true … there really is no position to be had. Either Apple opened a new store within the distance or they didn’t.

What appears to be happening is that the Union made a deal that, in this instance, was unfavorable for it’s members - and instead of owning up to it and admitting they were wrong, the Union is simply shouting ‘discrimination’ from the rooftops in hopes that they can pull a win from the jaws of a loss.

There’s nothing wrong with Towson Town Center that also isn’t true of Columbia Mall down the road.

But one is unionized and one is not.

Probably just a coincidence.

According to the linked article, the union “has filed an Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) charge with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).”

“If you believe one side then the other side is wrong” is simply begging the question. Apple’s position is that they have no obligation beyond the contract. The union says the contract requires equal treatment.

We'll have to see how this all plays out. Apple has a history of digging in their heels, so I expect them to fight. But in the end they may not need to.

That is the point of a contract. The terms of the contract (reportedly) say, in black & white, “first right of refusal for a new store opening with 50 miles.” The Union seems to be trying to argue that text of the contract should be ignored for some nebulous, undefinable, concept of ‘fairness’. The Union is acting is bad faith - just trying to smear Apple’s reputation and waste their money

I worked for a grocery store that had a union while I was in school. They encouraged me to sign up. I said nah and kept my full paycheck. I completed my degree and went on to get a real job.

If people who work for retail stores want a union, that's fine, but it's kinda sad to resign yourself to working an hourly job long-term.
Hourly jobs are not just for people in school. There are not enough workers in that social class to fill all the hourly jobs that are needed.

Also the social stigma around retail jobs was not always the case. People used to respect the skills required for good retail, and it was viewed as a career.

Learn some respect.
