Rumors...this is probably the next iMac. I seriously doubt more monitors are coming in the near future.

Maybe a 30", but again (my guess) it is a iMac (or Pro).

Maybe the next iMac runs iOS.

The rest of the industry is looking for ways to reduce power consumption. Screensavers gave way to standby, standby gave way to hibernate. Some day they may even result to actually permitting you to fully turn a device off.
Apple? Hey, let's stick a pseudo-computer in the display and make it an always active device.

That will be of rather limited use unless they add multi-touch (which they won’t because macOS).

If you've been following the design changes of macOS, you can see that touch support is coming at some point. As they bring more and more of the iOS interface and touch-friendly design to macOS, it's inevitable. The menubar and window title bars are now sized larger and more spacious on the latest macOS, for example. But touch still won't be the most ideal way of interacting with macOS. Too many compromises, which we can see with iPadOS.

I actually really like Google's Smart Home approach lately with a tablet that has a dock that goes into smart home mode.

Apple is working on a new external monitor for Macs that also functions as a kind of smart home display while not in use, according to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman.

Writing in the subscriber version of his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman says that Apple is developing multiple new monitor offerings, some of which are likely to be successors to its Studio Display and Pro Display XDR, and one that could have smart standby features powered by an onboard iOS chip.

If Gurman's claim is accurate, it would not be the first time Apple silicon has been used in an external display. Apple already includes a dedicated A13 chip in its existing 27-inch Studio Display, but its functionality is limited to handling camera and speaker features like Center Stage and spatial audio when the display is in use.

Using an iOS device chip to power independent smart features when a monitor is idle would be an evolutionary next step, and could possibly rely on an expanded version the new Standby feature in iOS 17, which turns a charging iPhone in horizontal orientation into a home hub with full-screen widgets. As for when we could see the smart monitor, Gurman says not to expect a release until 2024 "at the earliest."

Only $1999.99, adjustable height stand $400.

I would be happy with a just a nice monitor. I have no need to re-buy speakers, or webcam, or for cell phone CPU every time I need to upgrade my monitor. Interesting thought... will apple plan on unsupportin this monitor merely because the A13 will eventually get too old?

The 27" Apple Cinema Display (a 1.099 € display back in 2011) still worked with Monterey and Apple Silicon Macs, but then Apple introduced a software update, and since then, adjusting the brightness isn't possible anymore. ;)

Four months after that, the new Apple Studio Display was released. 👀

So I'm looking to get a super expensive Studio Display now. But I'm already scared of that update that'll make my Studio Display only show green and blue pixels, but not the red ones …

Or provide a remote, like my circa 2008 iMac came with.

One of the many reasons why I bought a Samsung M8 for my Mac Studio is because it doubles as a TV, with built-in streaming.

How would you interact with it since it has no touch input or otherwise?
Voice. That's all I ever use with my Amazon Echo Show, and it has touch.

I don't think whatever smart monitor they make will be affordable enough for me to buy, and it's not because I don't have the money -- I have a problem with spending as much money as a full PC on a stupid (or smart) monitor.

Ahh, these monitor rumors are such a tease.

Id love a new monitor. Though I dont expect them too make this, perfect for me would be a 32'' 5/6k screen with ProMotion. I would be fine that being in the $2500 range for that.

Until then, im just not being served by Apples product line. The studio display is too small to my liking / positioning / workflow, and 60Hz feels like molasses to me after being used to high Hz displays. Likewise, the Pro Display XDR is also 60hz, and it's way too much monitor for my needs and pocket.

...and 3rd party 4k monitors dont scale well at 2560, while Logic Pro is too small on screen at native 4k resolution.

Apple already beats the industry on power consumption. You don’t think this always on display will use the low energy cores of the processor? How much power does your iPhone use and that’s always on

Depends on what this actually is. If it is just a way to run streaming apps without needing macOS booted (like the latest Samsung 4K and 5K displays can do), it could be useful for a dorm room or bedroom since it could double as a TV.
Reminds me of the days of the Macintosh TV. Lol. It was a black Mac that doubled as a TV.

I just want the current XDR display at $2.5k and the nano/stand options at a max $500.
Unfortunately, looking at where Dell priced its new 6K monitor, the more likely scenario is that the new Apple 7K monitor will be priced at $4,999 without stand, and the XDR will drop to $3,999 including stand.
