Concerning all the guesses on the tablet's name...

The tablet concept was first given serious consideration as a general purpose computer (not just a handwriting recognition device) by Xerox PARC back in 1984. The same brilliant folks (working for moron upper management) that invented the GUI, mouse, Ethernet, Postscript, etc. It was part of a concept called "Ubiquitous Computing" that included iPhone-sized computers called "Tabs", wall-sized computers called "Boards" and tablet-sized computers in between called "Pads".

Given the names of Apple's existing products, and a little homage to Xerox, I always thought the perfect name would be iPad.

I like this line of thought. Then they can introduce a deluxe version in 3 years called the "maXi iPad"

While CDMA is seemingly a dead-end, it is certainly not dead yet. It will be around for many more years. Even after CDMA carriers turn on their 4G networks, they will not immediately shut down their CDMA networks.

My guess is that CDMA here in the States will be around at least 8-10 years, same with 2G GSM.

In the Southern Hemisphere Continents/Islands its practically dead.

Its dead in Australia and Telecom NZ is shutting their Towers apparently this year.

iPhone = Summer
iPod Touch= September

Macbook Pro is obviously going to be updated sometime between now and then with a price drop on the Macbook

Tablet is a possibility

Colorful macs would be cool! I have wanted a red anodized Macbook Pro or air. That would be sweet! Hey they do it with the ipod and shuffles. I guess you can send them out to be painted but anodizing is a bit cooler because you can still see the brushed aluminum. It pretty much wont happen but i could see the tablet doubling as a intuos type tablet where you can edit images or even create them for graphics using a stylus and pressure.

Engadget reports that Apple has issued invitations for a media event scheduled on January 27th. The invitation's tag line reads "Come see our latest creation."

Apple had been rumored earlier this month to have scheduled a media event for that date at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. Apple is widely expected to introduce its highly-anticipated tablet device at the event.

Personally I don't like that name. Or iSlate or iAnything. It just sounds kinda.... iCheesy.

I think they should just call it TabletMac or simply refer to it as "the Mac Tablet". (that is, if it is in fact a Mac at its core)

Those are all markets where the carriers have all moved to GSM/3G/etc.

The United States has a very large, very active group of CDMA using customers. Until this number dwindles, CDMA will still be around.

Like I said, I expect a good 8-10 years for CDMA in this country.

you know when steve says available in march all hell is going to break loose.
While Apple rarely pre-announces new products, it's not like this is without precedent.

Certain models of some products have had delayed ship dates. The iPhone is one notable exception where the availability followed the sneak preview by many months.

If you consider all the tablet rumors and what seems likely, the device would not be cannibalizing the sales of other Apple products. People will wait because they don't really have a choice, and it won't negatively affect Apple's revenue numbers.

I'd be satisfied if the only thing they did was end carrier exclusivity for the iphone ;)

It's a macbook, bumped up specs, with detachable/twisty touchscreen, in a variety of colors, geared towards the artsy/college crowd.

When its undocked it runs tablet os

When it is docked, it runs osx

Enjoy!

Despite the fact that I'm a happy AAPL stockholder, the headlines should be about the State of the Union, unless you're a tech media publication.

And besides, there is enough room on the Internet for coverage of both stories. In any case, there is at least a half day of coverage after Apple's announcement.

As a stockholder, I am not interested in seeing them change the date of their earnings announcement.

Yeah, although you have to think someone at Apple got yelled at for forgetting the State of the Union.

Apple doesn't want to share the spotlight with anyone — especially if this is as big as everyone is making it out to be (another leg of Apple's corporate stool).

The entire day is going to be filled with State of the Union preview coverage on all the major news networks (CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, CNBC, etc). The is the first State of the Union of the first African American President of the United States. It’s going to be a big deal.

If you remember, the iPhone announcement took up quite a bit of the news cycle in January of 2007.

My local news stations even did stories on it.

If they had the chance it do it again, I’m sure they would pick another day.

Here we go...

It will be a Tablet. Why?

- "Our latest creation" is definitely something new. Not an upgrade or new iteration of an old device. New.

- If it were not a tablet type device, Apple would have quashed this rumor over the last couple of weeks.

Now, if the rumors were limited to this website, no big deal. However, we have seen this rumor all over the media: NBC, CBS Sunday morning, The Washington Post, The New York Times, etc. To have that much build up in the media and on the internet and then produce some other device at the event would cause so much disappointment that it would condemn the non-tablet "latest creation" to the trash heap. The only thing they have quashed is the bounty offered for confirmation of a tablet.

As for those people rumoring that the announcement design signifies anything other than a cliched reference to creating (an artist pallet splattered on canvas), I'm sorry but that's just what it is. Hey, that isn't to say that the device won't be capable of use as a creative input device, just that that is not what that design is referencing.

If it's school work, you take the macbook. if it's a night on the town, you take the iphone. why buy another gadget, unless it will compete with the macbook. very confusing. this is a difficult one to market.

design

As for the Photoshop competitor on a touch screen rumours... I just don't think so. I'm a designer and art director. I just don't see myself working with my fingers. A pen tablet is so much more precise and I'm so much faster working with keyboard shortcuts. I really REALLY do not see this thing competing with Apple's other laptops. A keyboard is a much faster interface than a touch screen or writing with a pen. Serious work will remain on the laptops. I stand by my theory that this thing is a media consumption device. If there is a version of iWork really coming out for it, it will only be for very quick changes.

There are third part styli for iPhone too, I'm sure they'd work with the new device.

As a designer myself, I'm shocked you can't see the potential.
