In select U.S. states, residents can add their driver's license or state ID to the Apple Wallet app on the iPhone and Apple Watch, and then use it to display proof of identity or age at select airports and businesses, and in select apps.

Apple-Just-Expanded-iPhone-Drivers-License-Feature-to-14th-U.S.-State-Feature.jpg

Starting today, the feature is available in Arkansas, which is the 14th state to offer it. However, it may take some time to roll out to all users.

To set up the feature, open the Wallet app on the iPhone and tap on the plus sign in the top-right corner. Next, tap on Driver's License and ID Cards, select Arkansas from the list, and follow the on-screen steps to complete the process.

Supported States

The following states offer driver's licenses in the Wallet app:The feature is also available in Puerto Rico.

Future States

Apple or local DMV offices previously announced that the following U.S. states had signed on to adopt the feature, but no timeframes were disclosed:
  • Connecticut
  • Kentucky
  • Mississippi
  • Oklahoma
  • Utah
  • Virginia
Participating Airports

Apple Wallet IDs are accepted at TSA checkpoints in more than 250 airports in the U.S., for domestic travel. Given that Apple Wallet IDs are not accepted by law enforcement, and lack many other use cases, carrying a physical ID is still necessary.

Here are just some of the airports that offer the feature — there are hundreds of others:
  • Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI)
  • Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA)
  • Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD)
  • Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX)
  • Denver International Airport (DEN)
  • Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL)
  • Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport (CVG)
  • John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH)
  • San Francisco International Airport (SFO)
  • San Jose Mineta International Airport (SJC)
  • Los Angeles International (LAX)
  • Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL)
  • Des Moines International Airport (DSM)
  • Eastern Iowa Airport (CID)
  • Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ)
  • Lea County Regional Airport (HOB)
  • Luis Munoz Marin International Airport (SJU)
  • Billings Logan International Airport (BIL)
  • Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN)
  • Great Falls International Airport (GTF)
  • Missoula International Airport (MSO)
  • Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD)
  • Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW)
  • St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL)
  • Richmond International Airport (RIC)
  • Norfolk International Airport (ORF)
  • Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport (ROA)
  • Newport News-Williamsburg International Airport (PHF)
Travelers should refer to TSA signage to confirm availability of the feature.

Digital Passport

ios-26-digital-id-passport-wallet.jpg

If you live in a state that does not yet offer Apple Wallet IDs, you can now create a Digital ID based on your U.S. passport, and present it at the same participating TSA checkpoints, for age and identity verification purposes during domestic travel. It is not a replacement for a physical passport, and it cannot be used for international travel.

This feature requires iOS 26.1 or watchOS 26.1 and later.

Just get it done already. Glad my state has it but get this fully built out and get the infrastructure built to the point where we can get by with just our phone on us.

Spent a little bit trying to figure out what these 250 airports are, but havent really found a verifiable list. Found this on the TSA website though:

How it Works

You can now use your Digital ID at more than 250 airports to verify your identity at TSA checkpoints through platforms such as Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, and Samsung Wallet or a state-issued app.

TSA sees only the necessary information to verify your identity, providing a faster, more secure travel experience while reducing the risk of fraudulent documents. However, all passengers must still carry an acceptable compliant physical ID for verification.

*Seems kind of pointless still. Even my Kroger wont accept my digital license to purchase alcohol....

I live in Arizona, which means I've had this feature for over three years yet I've never used it. I fly out of PHX Sky Harbor a few times a year, and to this day not every checkpoint is properly equipped while I manage to routinely get into one the lines that isn't. Maybe next time.

No thanks. With AI on the rise, it’s only a matter of time before the government scans all these digital ids. Perfectly fine with the extra 2.5 seconds it takes me to pull out my physical drivers license card to put in the airport scanner

I’m in CA, and have had this feature since 2024, but was never able to use it. At the airports, they request for your actual RealID.
Even when flying in/out of PHX, ORD, LAX, they’ve always asked for your RealID.

Has anyone actually been able to use it? If so, for what occasion?

The TSA folks I've encountered seem to consider this method a huge burden. They'd rather keep the line moving with RealID. Which makes me think this initiative is going to have to turn into more of a mandate for it to have any impact. They've had a hard enough time getting people to comply with RealID.

Please tell me what information your digital ID has that’s not on your physical ID and why your physical would have some info that the “government” doesn’t already have, or can get easy access to…

I think you may be overestimating the security of your physical ID and underestimating the ease with which the “government” can add to its volumes about you if need be.

Plus, the Chinese probably have it all anyway.

Um. The government issues you the ID in the first place, which is the only reason it's any good for getting on an airplane or driving a car with.

The government possesses the ID before they give it to you. They also control the means to produce it and control what it looks like.

So the notion that the government is going to scan your digital ID and use it for some sort of AI malfeasance is akin to saying chickens are going to steal eggs to make omletes.

Your digital ID has all of the information already on your drivers license which is already in the system that generates it.
