Apple employees this month will compete to close their Apple Watch rings in Apple's annual "Close Your Rings Challenge," meant to inspire employees to get up and move.

The challenge, which kicked off July 1, lets Apple employees compete in teams of four to close their Activity Rings for the entire month of July. "Over the course of four weeks, compete for bragging rights, points and prizes as you move, exercise and stand your way to a better you," the company told staff promoting the challenge.

Employees who earn at least 1240 points will receive a special black quarter-zip performance jacket with the fitness ring seen in the image above.

I love this. But guess it’s for only Apple employees.
Agreed (like those shirts) and it does look like the event is only for Apple employees:
  • "Apple employees this month will compete"
  • "The challenge, which kicked off July 1, lets Apple employees compete"
  • "Employees who earn at least 1240 points"
Be interesting to see how many of these shirts show up on eBay.

I really wish Apple had a way to support other companies doing this with their employees who have apple watches. It’s a really good, fun and healthy team building thing.

I used to work for Apple. While you can’t get the shirt award, you can download the Challenges app and participate with teams or with your friends and family. The app works with a LoseIt! account.

Is there a challenges group here on MacRumors? If not, why don’t we start one and promote a healthier community?

What say ye, MacRumors staff? Could it be an annual thing that coincides with Apple’s maybe? Perhaps with your connections there could be prizes like special icons/badges or coupons… maybe even items if we’re feeling really competitive.

The way it worked at Apple was you had your teams and that affected the rankings, and you got certain rewards depending on your rank, Gold, Silver or Bronze. Basically, everyone could win!

Wish it’s valid for everyone. Just give a simple t-shirt instead of zipped one? An e-coupon for the free shirt could be given to the Apple Store app after Fitness app meets the requirement.

It’s a cheap promotion for potential Apple Watch users. Oh I get a free shirt for closing my rings for a month?! No other smartwatch brands out there would do that!!

Glad to see Close Your Rings is back for 2022! Will definitely be adding this to my collection.

For anyone who's curious, I'm keeping a detailed record of the Close Your Rings & Mindful Minute challenges in a separate thread here: (with pictures!)

A Detailed Look at Apple's Wellness Challenges: Close Your Rings & Mindful Minute
I just looked through your thread. I’ve rearranged my office so I’ll look through my Apple docs to see if I have the mindful minute card from 2017. I use the shirt to workout and get compliments on it all the time.

That'd be awesome if you did! I've only ever seen one of the MM shirts out in the wild, I believe that was at Apple 5th Ave. Mindful Minute is a very niche series to collect, so I would imagine most people with them are employees.

I bought my Apple Watch thinking I'll use it to get fit. But in the end I found it much more useful for getting Uber Eats notifications :(

A few years ago after I retired, I made a New Year’s statement that I will do some exercise. I was in a start up company and working 24/7. My life became miserable after 40 years. I had an exit, and I took it. Never looking back. I do a 6 mile walk every morning (as long there are no tropical storms or hurricanes). The early walks are amazing and I am in a new place today. Morning walks are a new realization on life. The rest of the day is a bonus.

I am in a better spot than 40 years ago. Loving life and engaged in wildlife photography and my high-end audio habit. The Apple Watch has helped me and pushed me to move. 800 + weeks later, I am for the better.

Incredible. I’m starting my fitness journey over again after some time off due to a minor issue with a tumor but I’m in treatment and now trying to get back in shape for my wedding on October. Your story is an inspiration and I can’t wait for the current slog of waking up and “needing” to workout becomes “wanting” do it because it’s who I’ve become.
