Most US schools are out from June till the end of Aug

I guess it depends how you use the word school as it varies from country to country. In America I believe school covers a wider scope and includes what in the U.K. we’d call Further Education or Higher Education, I.e post A-Levels/Highers. The promotion in the UK is fairly squarely aimed at people going to university or college having finished compulsory education.

I'm not a big fan of Beats, but I must say the Beats Solo3 Wireless are pretty decent. Yeah, they're expensive, but if you're getting them for free, why complain?
BTW, I use my Beats Solo3 Wireless headphones every day at work.

I bought AirPods for myself, and prefer AirPods at home and overall, but actually at work the Solo3 do have an advantage. I have a window AC at work and although the Solo3 doesn't have active ambient noise cancelling, it still does block out part of the AC noise because they are an over-the-ear closed design, so it works out well. At home I have no such background noise, which is one reason why I like the AirPods at home better.

Also, if you don't like the Solo3, there are other models available. If I could have gotten two free models, I probably would have bought the BeatsX or PowerBeats3 as the second pair to use during exercising. The AirPods don't seem ideal for that, since even at home a small jostle can dislodge them.

The 2017 iMac, MacBook Pro, and MacBook updates were all launched in early June though.

You could always try waiting until mid-September.

Yes, but I want an updated iMac and the back to school promotion. Want it all! :)

How nice of Apple to literally just give away ~$15 headphones with a $1000+ purchase, that's... laughable at best. :D

Why do they have a 'Back to School' promotion when the kids haven't even left yet for the holidays?

This is the time of year when a lot of college kids are preparing to go back to school. A lot of universities start in early to mid August in the U.S. Apartment leases usually start on August 1st so you start buying things to move in and get settled. TVs, game consoles, laptops, beds, couches, etc. Scouring Craigslist and dipping into college funds, summer earnings, loan and scholarship disbursements, and graduation money to buy new gear to last you the next several years. Students will be making a lot of purchases in the coming weeks.

Interesting note: I work on a large college campus and our analytics show a much higher use of Macs and iPhones than average. macOS is about half of Windows and iOS is about three times Android. When I segment by secondary dimension of age, groups 18-24 have roughly equal Windows/Mac usage and iOS is a little over double that of Android.

Bleh. Just offer AirPods. Who wants that beats garbage?
I'm consistently amazed by the negative attitudes from people on the internet regarding FREE items. Beats are overpriced at retail, but they are NOT garbage. Especially for free...

Oh look, someone else who has obviously never used them. Your estimation of $15 is the only laughable part of this. The W1 chip alone is worth more than that.

Some of the old Beats were WAY overpriced and not very good. Mediocre stuff at insane prices. However, by most reviews the Beats Solo3 is a decent upgrade over prior models, and I personally think they're pretty decent too. Not worth the US$300 retail price, but I think they are reasonable to be sold for $200.

Indeed. Even if they should only be priced at $200 retail and sold at $150 on sale, that's still $150 - $200 free with this deal.

The real old Beats by Monster Cable were the lousy ones.

I got this promo last year with the iPad Pro, BeatsX rocks.

A lot of people think like you do, but what they do is just sell on eBay or Kijiji. The only problem with this is there is a flood of them for sale in August.

I always feel that Apple is being rather cynical offering a frivolous bribe to students instead of something with real practical value (like they used to do with the extended warranties).

I wouldn't mind upgrading to an iPad Pro with pencil, so I could finally get to test this technology. And throw in a free pair of beats. Just update the iPads now please.

Why do they have a 'Back to School' promotion when the kids haven't even left yet for the holidays?

My kid has been off since May 24th and goes back Aug 15th. Not all schools start in September!

Mine got out June 8 and goes back July 24. They're on a modified year-round schedule, which is becoming increasingly popular in many districts. Long gone is the traditional June -Sept summer vacation. We get more time off throughout the year which is nice, as after about 6 weeks of summer vacation, boredom sets in.

There's something just fundamentally wrong about promoting "back to school" in the middle of July. Heck, Summer has barely started.
As a retired teacher, I have to say say that the phrase "back to school" affects me in about the same way as being told by my lawyer "your appeal has been denied," or by my doctor "don't bother starting any long Russian novels."

Both of my university daughters were out mid-May. The local K-12 school districts all end before Memorial Day. Albeit they resume mid-August. Timing seems about right for this part of the country (Colorado).

Same applies here (Ohio). Colleges were out mid-May, and going back mid-August. My K-12 kids were out before Memorial Day weekend and will be going back mid-August. Back-to-school specials are now in full swing, with parents getting their college-bound kids dorm stuff, parents like me going out to get school supplies. Usually by early August, at least around here, back to school stuff have been picked over!

Protip: Dr Dre doesn't even use "his" own headphones for either casual listening or music production, he uses Sony V6 headphones like many professionals - and myself included as I own a 1st gen pair purchased in 1986 that I still own - and tossing some chip in 'em which further colors the audio is not a tenable solution or excuse either.

But thanks for playing... ;)
