PressReader

free app, then put in your local library details and your library card number.

actual selection of newspapers and magazines will vary by region/council..
I get local papers as well as the national big ones, and tons of magazines that I used to buy. It’s not everything, but for free, it’s pretty blinking good.

RBDigital is for audiobooks and graphic comic books, I think.

this is the same service we have in milton keynes in the UK. But i think the level of access depends on the library and what contract they have. When I go on PressReader it wants me to subscribe to get full access to magazines and newspapers, otherwise it's limited to just a few. RBDigital for the books seems to have most content though.

LOL image paying actual money to read a bunch of words written by “journalists”.

Most of their garbage can be found online for free.

Thankfully Apple lets you delete this app.

Paw doesn’t go in for any of that fancy book learning.

Is there a list of everything available in the UK yet? It's a shame to just have the one newspaper. I was hoping for a couple more to make it seem worth it. And no Total Film? Don't know why that's available in the US but not here.

I really would like a news service like this, but Apple News+ is bad.
- the newspaper selection is very limited and not growing as far as I can tell.
- the reader is worse than a website in reader mode (for example, you can't zoom on article text).
- it's harder to find articles in the News interface than on a normal news website.
- links on the web or social media don't understand how to redirect into the News app, so you get stuck on the website / paywall anyhow.
And I'll bet, considering that this is Apple, that conservative and libertarian voices and newspapers will be drowned out by the left/democrat-leaning mainstream media actors. Apart from Daily Telegraph, this will most likely be a partisan left-leaning news service, without any true sense of diversity of opinion and news coverage. I'd be gladly proven wrong, but I doubt it.

Interesting how they got the UK Times on board, despite their individual subscriptions being over £20 a month normally.

Not that bad at all.

I only had to pay £1/week or £5/month for my Times digital subscription. Anything above that and you're surely paying for the physical copies of the paper delivered to your address.

I did not like the part that auto deletes publications. You have no control over what stays on your device or not. I downloaded a bunch of things to read on an airplane And once I was in the air I realized the device had deleted them needless to say I canceled my subscription.

Enjoy the overpriced mediocrity!

Folks who don't understand the value of Apple News + obviously weren't magazine readers or you'd be ecstatic over the value of the service.

How much would it cost you to subscribe to a few hundred magazines? It sounds like you are for squeezing more from the publishers as well, but Apple is hopefully keeping them alive as folks have largely stopped buying paper copies and can't afford to have multiple subscriptions. Heck, one or two a month is more than Apple News +. The WSJ included pays for it for me alone, but I have saved a ton each month by having them all for one price to read on my beautiful iPad.

I am a magazine reader but Apple News+ is messy. Readly has far, far more content and its £7.99 a month for family. Hardly any of the magazines I read on Readly are available on News+. I’m disappointed as I wanted to switch to News+. There will need to be a vast improvement before I consider it though.

By the way, suddenly Sky&Telescope magazines disappeared since the past week. I don't know why. Maybe because recently they changed the owner (publisher). I've contacted the publisher; still waiting for a reply.

I quote myself for an update for those who are, in case, interested.

I got a reply from Sky&Telescope. As imagined, the magazine is not available anymore due to the ownership change. It's unknown if/when the magazine will reappear on Apple News+. It's up to the American Astronomical Society which owns now the magazine.

Can’t get it to work for me. Updated iOS and still not showing? I’m in the UK.

Poor choice in the UK at the moment. Most magazines I’ve followed are the US version not UK version. Will give it the 30 days.

Thats just for the first 8 weeks. Its 26 quid/month thereafter.

I signed up for the free month trial but after 15 minutes browsing I won't be continuing with it. Navigating is a pain and when I use it on my 2018 MacBook Air the fan really ramp up (it hardly ever comes on in normal usage).

Journalists are important for every society. Getting news just from Youtube, Twitter and Facebook creates a dangerous echo chamber of non knowledge. Just look at that dumb president from the US. :p

It’s almost entirely Murdoch publications in Australia. Hardly left leaning!

In today's highly politicised media (especially with highly biased actors like CNN and NYT, who pretend to be otherwise), we need different perspectives to avoid echo chambers or one-sided narrative-driven news consumption. If Apple chooses quality outlets from both the left, center and right, then I'll certainly be interested in looking further into this service.

Agree, except they haven’t. They’ve clearly partnered with Murdoch in AU. One of a few reasons I won’t continue a subscription.

Really? The left are now controlling the academia and pop culture in the Western world, as well as about 90% of the mainstream media. I guess Australia is one of the few exceptions..? Just look at what the left has done to Western Europe and North-America the last decade, and be very happy that the cultural radicals are not running the show in Australia.

Here in Norway there is basically no conservative mainstream media left, and it has really damaged our public discourse and society overall.

When you expect the news to cater to your own narrow view of the world, it's not the news that's biased.

"...expect the news to cater to your own narrow view"
That's a bit of speculation or projection, my friend; and your response appears to illustrate my point. I'm a Libertarian, and I don't care for any current or wanna-be political contenders'. ~ cheers
