Can someone explain to a noob why this can't be done online at home? Or I guess why they are making you go into the store? Thanks in advance!

I've been on the phone to a few Apple people about this. I've only just bought this as a refurb and yet they didn't think to do it during that process? Two different service centres said very likely have to go off for 5-7 days for a replacement hard drive, that's not firmware clearly. A senior support tech told me it was a simple job, taking a few minutes but a full reinstall of the o/s takes the rest of the hour. He also told me it wasn't serious, it was a security issue and I wouldn't lose anything so leave it till the rush dies down. For me it's a 1/2 day off issue because the centre is not at all close by and very busy. I agree with others, if its software, give us a link and instructions how to create a boot drive, as they do for the whole o/s anyway.

Overall a very poor experience with Apple, their own staff can't get the story straight.

I ended up having to cancel my appointment last Thursday, we had a tiny bit of weather here in the UK and that meant the trains stopped running. Trying again this Thursday but if they keep my laptop at that point they'll be keeping it until next year as I finish work for Christmas the following day.

Took my MacBook Pro in and they went through the procedure of testing with diagnostic tools -> passed -> installed new firmware -> passed installation -> verified new firmware with a bootable back up from super duper -> reformatted my hard drive -> restored from bootable back up. The whole thing took an hour with it being the associates first time doing this particular update.

I visited a non authorized service center last Friday as there is no authorized service centers in my area
They told me that I am running the latest firmware
But after reading this forum I think that they are wrong
I have the j version ...

DriveDx reports my Ssd in excellent condition
I decided to take backups in regular basis and postpone service
Apple states that this program is valid for 3 years after purchase
So I have 2 and half years left in case that ssd goes wrong
What do you think ?

I was yesterday in my local Apple Store, Oberhausen, Germany (One of the biggest, top 3 in germany). There were three people next to me at the Genius Bar with the same problem. Here the process from my understanding:

Genius explains the complete process (backup!, because of erase).
Plugs powercable and an ethernet cable into the macbook.
Runs standard disgnostic on his 9.7“ iPad, everything was fine for me (all checkboxes green).
Restarts macbook and selects bootup from specific server location.
You have to wait 10-20min. After that the macbook gets into somekind of recovery mode and offers a firmware update for the ssd with complete erase of the ssd (backup!). Wait another 10-20min, till firmware update is finished. Everything worked fine, here is the point were faulty ssds fail(?) and you have to get the macbook checked in for repair/ssd exchange (genius said max. 14 days return time, but all customers with me only had to run the update and they were good to go).
The last steps were (genius said „precautionary“) reinstall of fresh macos (you are able to select from your own time machine backup, so my tip bring it with you in the store), genius ran another standard diagnostic, everything fine again.

Done. I was around 1-2h in the store with everything.

Made screenshots before and after, you can clearly see the firmware update.

Thank you for posting those screenshots. My serial number search said I "MAY" be affected. So I looked at my revision, and looks like mine MPB is new enough to have the firmware applied. I just purchased mine in December 2018.

Check in your System Profiler under the NVMExpress portion and verify your revision. If you are on
CXS4LA0Q, you are good to go!

Hi, I took my wife's 2017 MacBook pro 13" for the warranty service. I live in Jamaica, so they had to order the SSD which the job sheet said was replaced under warranty. I did not have the presence of mind to record the previous serial#/firmware revision. This is what it says now:

Entire process took 3 days.

Sorry to be posting on such an old thread, but I was only able to take my MBP to the authorized service provider today. He took the computer to the back and returned saying that his tool said nothing needed to be done. My serial number was definitely in the range and after putting in my serial number, Apple's webpage said my machine was affected. I checked my System Profile and the data on the SSD is rather different than what others have posted.

Model: APPLE SSD AP0256J
Revision: 16.14.01

The guy at the service provider was kind of a jerk, so I am not certain if he did it right. Can anyone confirm that the model and Revision above are okay?
