Having only joined the tablet bandwagon with the new Air, I'm rather new to this whole different-apps-on-the-iPad thing. I was kind of surprised that a lot of apps weren't universal. I hadn't bothered to look at the Apple Store app yet, but it's good Apple has finally made an iPad version for the next time I'm up at 3 AM ordering something. It would have been somewhat jarring to see it was a 2x iPhone app.

See? I kept saying they needed an iPad app for it, especially after they updated the iPhone version for iOS 7. (In fact, I kept pointing to Target, Amazon, Walmart, eBay, et al, doing this for their stores.) Of course, then repeatedly came the "No, that's something Apple will never do," phrase of the naysayers. :p

I guess Apple finally conceded my point and decided to do something about it. :D

This is a bit of a lazy way out.

Why not actually take the time to build a better store UI that works across all devices...don't preach what you don't practice Apple!

Also, why the hell would you not make it universal?!

So you don't have to burden the iPhone version with any extra code needed for the iPad, and vice versa.

I don't see having 2 versions as an issue because the app is free, and on top of that I like having a smaller app (than a universal one) on both devices. Sure, it might only save a few MBs, but those extra few MBs needed in a universal app adds up when you have hundreds of apps on each device. :)

IMO, the universal app route is better when a particular app costs money -- obviously so you don't have to buy 2 separate versions of the same app.

I totally agree with everything you said. That being said, it would be awesome if Apple could set up a system for developers to have separate iPhone and iPad apps, but still make them "universal". Currently, if an app is universal, it means it's 1 app that can be downloaded on either device, and has the code for both. That means the iPhone has unnecessary iPad files, and ditto for the iPad. It would be cool if the App Store had a model for developers where the purchase of an iPhone app would entitle you to download the iPad version for free. This would still make the app "universal", but would keep the two versions separate that way your device doesn't get clogged up with unneeded files.

I am amazed that apple can get away with charging $300 for an extra 112gb of space, when their cost is probably $50

Why did it take Apple so long to make an iPad version???
Not enough programers to do this simple update?

And why does Apple think someone will not walk in story with iPad and make a purchase with it?
I have seen and elderly person using a Mini in an Apple Store, I presumably think becuase it was easier to read big letters on a big screen.

To make the new Apple Store app, we began with a design that we really loved, but to build it, to implement it, we had to look way beyond what we knew to be possible. It took all of our learning, our best thinking, to realize something so simple, so clear, and yet so truly extraordinary. - Jony Ive

No matter how hard I try, I can't read it without his accent in my head!

Mark Gurman at 9to5Mac claims Steve killed it 3 years ago.

Does anybody have the link of the original article? I remember hearing something like that.. would be nice to track back and see thoughts/opinions back then.

Great post! Might be worth starting an actual thread about this to spark a little discussion. Kind of waste buried in this article :)

It's not 3 years for the app. It's how long it took apple to realize its customers were too lazy to just use the web page on their ipads to buy their products :)

Seriously; what's wrong with just going to their store web page? How come they couldn't make it work from the web browser?

Finally...Seriously, how could it take Apple 3+ years to put out an App for its own store

Three things:

  1. Steve allegedly canned this years ago, but it makes sense that is being released now based on what we know about Tim Cook's plans to push more sales through Apple-owned properties (digital or otherwise)
  2. I find it very strange that this was not a universal app
  3. I've always been surprised that this app doesn't come as a default app on all iOS devices. Why not make it even easier for users to get hooked and dream of owning even more Apple products?

Design is gorgeous. UI is non existent and therefore the initial user experience is horrible. I had to figure out how to close a linked product. Some popup windows can't be closed by tapping the background while others can.

Why make everyone guess how to use it, no different than Windows 8. "Here it is, you figure it out." Apple could have provided a tips icon that pops a tutorial and/or a quick video intro to the UI when you first launch the app. Something.

How could something so core to Apple not be made for the iPad this whole time?

EASY...52% of Apple's revenue comes from iPhone, 17% of Apple's revenue comes from iPad.

Heck, the iOS is ONLY optimized for iPhone and as a result barely runs on iPad.

Follow the money.

There will not be universal apps for all three until Macs drop intel

Of course there can be. Just not in the same way as with iPhone/iPad. They can just combine them in the App Store, you buy the Mac version you bought them all.

edit: I would probably prefer that iOS-devices switch to intel rather than Macs to ARM btw.

iBeacons are coming!

I was in one of the Stores in DE this week and scanned the store using BLE and no surprise that lots of info started pouring into my iPhone... Don't be surprised if the Apple Store app now includes iBeacon support!

The app ist still not available in Germany. What is hindering Apple from releasing it internationally? The iPhone app is available, so to me it does' take any sense.
