Any word on the specs?

Needs at least a 2ghz Core 2 and the 9400M to be worth $899. Or they could easily sell the last gen 20" for $899.

1.83GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
1GB memory
160GB hard drive1
24x Combo drive
Intel GMA 950 graphics
Built-in AirPort Extreme Wi-Fi (802.11g)

It has been shown before in the forum posts.

It isn't GOING to be upgraded.

I don't understand this. This computer has existed since SEPTEMBER 2006. What the crap does it have anything to do with anything NOW?!

I have been asking myself the same question. I guess people just realized it still exists.

you seem to be taking this pretty well. why don't you show a little passion, get mad... :D

This is an apple cripple for education. You get better deals in the refurb section than the education section anymore. Last really good education deal was the SE/30. In fact, I think they still sell it as a direct purchase institutional option...

People where annoyed about the Mac mini not getting an update for so long...imagine my frustration at the school where I work...looking to buy new computers this summer..."Why exactly are we staying with Apple?" would be the question on some minds.

Why Apple would release this, is beyond me. Like seriously.

Why would Apple release this with a combo drive. When I was in school, it was such an inconvenience to have to burn a DVD because the Macs we used were combos too. This was years and years ago mind.

I think the point of its specs not being upgraded is that is exactly what schools like it makes it easy for rolling out disk images and repairs. Basically the same reason a company will buy 1000 base line dells regardless of individual needs.

Please...thats pushing it...will Apple just never upgrade it?

Or at the very least, drop the price!

I think kabanaru is on to something here. I was just on engadget a few minutes ago and there was a story about this, and then five minutes later it was gone.

hmmmm......

it's true, it's still in my RSS feed:

"Don't disregard that eerie feeling of déjà vu -- you're right on track, Sherlock. Around three years ago, Apple decided to nix its aging CRT-based eMac while introducing a lower-end 17-inch iMac to fill the void. Today, we're staring a March 2009 education newsletter in the face with an awfully similar message, save for the fact that there's no eMac-like line to bury. At any rate, the clipping clearly states that a new 17-inch iMac should be available starting at $899, and while no 17-incher appears on Apple's EDU site today (there's just a single 20-inch model along with three 24-inch configurations), we wouldn't be shocked to see it creep in there shortly. Really though, this has been a long time coming. The gap in the lineup is glaring, and if takes pressure from educators to get a 17-inch machine back in the family, more power to 'em."

I think there's gonna be an update

Why not?

With a spec update, it would be a fine machine. School(and some people) don't need all 20''+ screens.

Yep, the Mini was in the same spot and it got an upgrade, would have been nice to see the education iMac get an upgrade.

Though if it follows with the eMac, it'll get an upgrade and get s-canned several months later.

I thought without a doubt it would be getting an aestehtic upgrade after reading: "The new iMac line is also available in a 17-inch model"

The "new" iMac line.

So in part because of this thread, I booted up the G5 17'' iMac, screen size really is not a problem for me on it(I'm have it share the keyboard+mouse with my main set up, quite useful!

You missed my point: Some in my school district are going to be asking why we are buying the same exact, same spec'd machine as we did last year at the same exact price. Think about it.

I think Apple is really reaching a crossroads now. Apple has always sold their hardware at a premium, but almost always delivered a lower total cost of ownership, a very significantly better overall computing experience than MS Windows, and a hardware lineup that was either better than or reasonably in line with the variety of hardware devices you could buy from other manufacturers. But now the competition has gotten radically more inexpensive, while MS Windows is now delivering a reasonably good computing experience (OS X is still much better, but the point is that MS Windows isn't infuriating to use anymore), and Apple now doesn't even fully serve the markets it used to, and thus Apple also obviously hasn't kept up with the growing variety of hardware devices such as netbooks. Now add on the fact that the economy is doing very poorly, and the result is that Apple is seriously not keeping up with the market.

Apple has to decide soon - is it going to continue to be a premium computer seller that offers top notch innovative computer hardware at a high price to match, or is it going to deliver computers which aren't as high quality but will have a price that at least somewhat matches what the competition is offering. Because at the moment Apple is delivering computer hardware that is not better than the competition, but it's still pricing them much higher than the competition.

Which path are you gonna choose Apple? Because if you don't chose either fork in the road soon, then you're gonna drive straight into a tree.

A more expensive computer with less specs?

I would buy a mini and a 17 inch dell monitor before that
