I know Apple has lots of it, but this is just a pure waste of money.

What is the point of wasting billions to create a competitor to Google Maps and all its services? Even in the best case scenario that Apple improves upon Google Maps, Apple Maps will only be used by iPhone users because Apple will not offer it on competitive devices, period. And a better mapping app will not drive more users over to Apple because there will always be more people interested in a $200 phone then a $1200 phone, and Apple will NEVER sell a marginalized iPhone just to gain market share. They tried with the 5c, failed, and will never do that mistake again. So in reality Apple is not creating a competitor or detractor, just their OWN service.

This is one of the most blatant wastes of money by a company just because they have some old hate-on grudge against Google.

This is also part of Apple's core xenophobic behavior that has them striving to become a petulant monolithic company that excludes partnerships with other companies out of sheer arrogance and stupidity. I thought this would go away with Steve Jobs but obviously there is still a core set of execs that are carrying the torch and wasting billions rather then striking a partnership with a competitor to improve the user experience instead of hindering it.

Apple could give away a few billion or whatever this will ultimately cost, and it would do more for their brand then a competitive Street-View emulator.

Apple tried that and Google screwed them by withholding turn by turn. Apple is doing the right thing to get into maps and search. They'll maintain control of their own destiny and hurt their biggest competitor in the process. Seems like a no brainer.

The iPhone 5C was a failure???? It out sold android flagship phones.

Only thing I like about Google Maps is distances/directions. Apple Maps 3D!

Yeah, who cares if the map doesn't actually show you the place accurately or get you where you want to go, let's look at the pretty pictures!

"It may not be right, but it sure looks pretty!" Sheesh.

At the end, every map service is just a huge database and nothing more. To have a good and reliable database you just need two things: people and sources. Seems like apple dont have enough people and their sources are bad because outside the us, google maps is far more superior.

Looking at that map, it seems Apple once again forgot 75% of its revenue now comes from outside the United States!

Coming Soon to America... iOS9. Coming Soon everywhere else... iOS8 with new background images and a new name!

"It may not be right, but it sure looks pretty!" Sheesh.

It regularly shows the correct locations, though it occasionally also has errors. Only reason I use Google Maps is select distance/directions, otherwise I use Apple Maps.

If they are doing street view type maps in the US good but what about the rest of the world. Many things from Apple like this take a long time to go international, if at all.

We have Google Maps which is updated fairly regularly depending on the location, could be better. Been in this house 5-6 years but it's still MIA on the Google aerial images and the street view is 5 years old.

How soon before they just send out a bunch of drones to go down streets to get the images?

Apple tried that and Google screwed them by withholding turn by turn.

This is a half true, both companies didn't agree to the terms each other wanted, and therefore, they didn't renew the agreement for maps

----------

That's not what happened. This has been documented.

BOTH companies couldn't come to an agreement. And rightly so: BOTH had legitimate different business needs.

Google demanded the personal data and locations of Apple users, and Apple is not in the business of selling that info. It would be a big mistake if Apple caved in on that point. Yet Google's not wrong to ask for that data--selling anonymized data to advertisers it's what they're all about.

If Apple would not give Google that data, then Google would not give Apple updated maps (vector tiles etc.).

So Apple had no choice but to part ways. Blame both companies or blame neither, but don't blame Apple.

Couldn 't agree more, well, just one caveat, Google doesn't sale any type of data, anonymous or not

Couldn't they have used something besides a plain minivan? Why not hybrids?

Not enough 'i's in the word.

----------

At Apple's current speed, we will be seeing this service in the UK when the seawater levels have risen so much, that not much of the UK is left.

But there'll be much less UK to map, thereby speeding up the process. Always look on the bright side of life.

Is that a serious question?

Because it's on the peoples nature. Some people enjoy nothing more then moaning and complaining :D:D

so you dont think people would enjoy a better working app more? or the option to use a better working app as the default one?

I had one huge issue with Apple Maps in California recently where it tried to convince us to get to the parking lot of a restaurant by making a right turn across the embankment and jumping the jersey wall. "Your destination is on the right." Yeah, I can see it right there, that's just great.

On the other hand, I used to live in an apartment where I had to tell anybody visiting me, "don't use Google Maps, because they will lie to you."

I have yet to find an actual error-free mapping service.

Same here. Google and Garmin have both led me astray on multiple occasions, as, of course, has Apple Maps. It's the nature of GPS apps, evidently.
I find myself using Maps more often than not, because I like its interface. And it seems to be improving over time.

Sorry, but I don't see the point in reinventing the wheel.

If a company maps a street than that's mapped, and we should move on.
What in the world is the point in one company mapping a street, then another company doing the same thing?

It benefits no one duplicating the process.

For some things, in the computing world, yes sure, offer an alternative, but to try and re-map the world, with Apple Cannot do, as it simply does not have the worldwide commitment or interest in doing so, ten just don't bother.

A few days ago I spotted one in Chicago.

Amazing so they work tirelessly to improve Maps in the US. Even if they achieve it there, their product is still crap compared to Google's if you happen to be anywhere else.

I agree this is pointless. They cannot compete on US soil and in the rest of the world their effort is barely showing at all.
