I decided to buy this case (even though it was hideously expensive) and I notice that it should have a feature where you open it and it automatically wakes the phone then when you flap it shut it sleeps it. But it does nothing for me? Is there a setting to enable this or am I thinking of a different case? Thanks

(I have an iPhone X not XS) I think that might be the reason why.

When I got my case, the setting automatically appeared under Display and Brightness.
Have you got the X or Xs case? I've got a vague memory of reading somewhere that the magnets were in different positions so the automatic screen on might not work.

Sleep/wake functionality requires the model-specific case, because the relevant sensors are in different locations on the X and XS. You'll need the folio case for the X if you want it to work.
