This philosophy went out of the window a few iOS versions ago.

E. g. The multitasking on iPad. Not intuitive at all. 3D Touch on the keyboard? I am probably the only person i know who knows this even exists etc.
You're right. I meant hardware designs

Before: iOS is too simple.
Now: iOS is not intuitive anymore.
Lesson: design is always a compromise and complexity of features has a cost.

What if the Apple logo :apple: in the back of the phone is actually the Touch ID?
Not in hells chance. Just atrocious. The user friendly appeal will just diminish if they do that.
Apple creates intelligent, intuitive designs. That's all you need to know to be 100% confident that won't happen.

Hoe about this shady video from a factory where someone is shown putting his finger on the logo to 'check something'?

I think Apple has experimented a lot with a rear TouchID but ultimately decided it was just a horrible implementation. Which is it.

By the sound of things, FaceID will be the holy grail of authentication.

That alleged phone is made out of aluminum. All new models this year are going to have a glass back. It's either a fake trying to mess people up or a Chinese knockoff

The only reason people argue fingerprint input on the back is problematic is because it's an Android feature.

It's not at all cumbersome to use, it's actually very simple and intuitive for how most hold their phones (and far better than trying to get a finger down to Touch ID on the plus iPhones.

But anyway, I would be surprised at this point if Apple did that. Looking forward to trying the facial recognition.

Not true. I prefer to use my thumb to unlock my iPhone. TouchID on the back isn't a dealbreaker for me, but it would pretty much limit me to my left index finger. Just personal preference.

It's not so much an Android feature as it is a workaround for bezelless phones and possibly no market-ready tech for the scanner under the screen.

You may be right, but like we've seen several versions of the alleged iPhone 8, this may be an older version too.

Why wouldn't they implement this in the final model? We only have some 'sources' to go on and part leaks always show the Apple logo which means you can't really tell if it's a scanner.

It would be safe having a backup for the face scanning. Maybe people prefer to not have the phone look at their face for every unlock.

I don't know how many times I have to repeat this. The OLED model WILL NOT have any sort of fingerprint recognition ability. Whatsoever. If you really like Touch ID that much get a 7s. Apple is going to really mess with the features with the lineup this fall. It will much harder to decide the perfect model next month.

I guess you have to repeat it until the thing actually comes out. Or were you involved with designing it?

Just my opinion, but I don't believe Apple experimented with touch ID in the back at all. I don't think they even considered touch ID on the back of the iPhone. I think Face ID has been a consideration in the process for a long time.

I use it all the time so that's two of us not counting the folk that mention using it on threads where folk moan about 3D Touch being pointless all the time.

I use many "security sensitive" Apps that have integrated TouchID. 2 Banks, 2 Credit cards, PayPal, etc. Even on the new iOS 11 beta, Touch ID is needed to download Apps from the App Store. There is no way Apple will shut down a technology that is new, and highly improved, lately, for face recognition alone... Apple and a lot of companies have invested time and effort integrating TouchID and I, for one, don't think they will delete it all together.
FaceID should only work when u are facing the phone. What if the phone is flat on a night table and u are in bed at night just trying to see what time it is... U can either ask Siri or touch the home button to wake up the phone and then just glance from a position FaceID could not see your face. What if u wear different glasses, or sunglasses or your hair is in your face in a way that u look like someone else.
Just look at the Faces feature on Photos and u will see that it gets confused a lot.
I love new technology and hope it will work as promised, but removing a proven, easy to use fingerprint scanner that is widely adopted by thousands of Apps, seems to be a mistake, IMHO...

Face palm. You known nothing about the facial recognition technology.

It uses infrared light. It shoots the light toward your face. Your face reflects the light back toward the sensor on the phone. The phone measures time-delay of the light being retrieved by different depths it hit. Your nose is retrieved first, guess why? It's closer to the emitter than your cheek. It's really not hard to understand. Glasses won't affect it of course, as even wearing glasses it will still have more reference points than Touch ID ever had.

P.S. The faces feature in photos has absolutely nothing to do with this technology. See, the face feature is using computer algorithms to detect similarities in faces without depth information, which is incredibly difficult. This gets depth information, and therefore is insanely simple (comparatively)
