A couple of random observations:

1) China Mobile has lots of GSM users, but a totally unique 3G system. Apple would have to either only sell an EDGE phone (is there EDGE support in China at all?) or create a unique iPhone model for them.

Nokia, HTC and Palm are supposedly planning China Mobile 3G models, btw.

2) China Unicom only has about 140 million GSM users. The USA has that many CDMA users and they have far more money for data plans such as the iPhone needs.

Really Apple should've done this in the first place in America, I'm guessing they went for the single carrier contract so they could receive more advertising and break into the market. Id say they have well and truly broken in now. Here in Australia every major carrier has always had them, and as of the 3GS you can buy them outright on the online store. So for me this isn't really news, just common sense. More $$$$

Smart move... To bad apple didn't think of this when they first released the Iphone in the US.. If that was the case, sales would be double of what they are now.
