This will be linked to our iTunes account? I better stock up on 20% off iTunes gift cards!

I really hope this is the case. Being able to get a 20% discount on a new computer would be fantastic. Plus, over here, Morrisons supermakets give you a 1p per litre off petrol for every £10 you spend on any gift cards, so spend £1000 on iTunes cards, get 20% off your computer, and a tankful of petrol at 1/3rd the price. Score!

How well do you want over a 3 year old hardware to be supported on the latest operating system? I seriously don't know what makes you think that a nearly 4 year old hardware would run it's operating system anywhere remotely close to how the latest hardware handles it, or you would be able to do on it pretty much everything you do on the latest. Technology does age too you know.

well in this case its apple that is forcing the latest os on us so thats perhaps a question for them.

as for the slightly different question of how well do i want a device that costs over $600 (and in some parts of the world twice that) to work 3-4 years later. i think features that can be implemented should be. the fact of the matter is that these first gens iphones arent much better than similarly old nokias today.

i can run xbmc, chrome etc on my 7 year old c2d imac but quizup, hot or not or facetime audio (even though skype works) dont work on the first few gens of iphones.

and please tell me how well supported you think you are with a fresh restore of the highest possible os on an iphone 3?

apple did try to combat this recently with allowing vendors to offer older version of their apps but i find that a tad too little too late but of course apple already got their money (long long time ago) so they are not really bothered. but people defending this and saying its the only way like we are talking about h&m level of prices here.

Well, millions of Europeans have!

Just trying to say that outside the US, Apple will have a years time doing anything with mobile payments (assuming they will do anything at all).

And I think in South Korea they are already a well-developed NFC payment system. The US is trailing in this area by a lot.....

The main value in developing a payments solution is to bypass the credit card companies completely - cut out their percentages.

Really, the credit card companies are not going to charge a processing fee?

Look, Apple's going to charge a fee to the user, and the credit card companies are also going to charge a merchant's fee - there ain't no free lunches, the end-user's gonna' pay.

30% on each payment going thru Apple ;)

iCurrency would be awesome, every couple years Apple would render old currency obsolete and force you to buy new.

Maybe so, but Apple will focus on the US first and there's nothing here of any worth.

From reading this thread, doesn't seem like there's a company that's cornered the market in Europe either.

Bet it'll never happen. And we already have paypal and contactless payment through NFC and chips built into cards. No one wants yet another system... and not many use the systems.

In fact I can guarantee it'll fail if it means shops and stores have to purchase or hire new equipment just for Apple, then again the banks will tell em what to do with the idea anyway as they have their own systems.

Although I bet they try and push you to use an iWatch to pay for things..

When was the last Morrisons store you went into that let you use contactless payment of any type?

The most things Apple takes a lot a time for is top notch so I'm looking forward to it.

Woah. I see what they're doing now. They've literally been thinking of how this is going to work 5-7 years down the road and carefully taking their baby steps to be perfectly set up to take full advantage of it and become an incredible power in the field of mobile payments. Can't wait for it to be implemented. I don't see it happening with the 6, but probably with the 6S.

If history has shown anything, this is just gonna be another feature Apple hypes to sell the next iDevice. Then once they've hit their X million iPhone/iPad targets, they'll barely touch it afterwards. Like Passbook. Or iCloud. Or SIRI. Or those iMovie and Cards apps. Year and a half later, Apple Maps still sucks.

Stuff like mobile payments are just bullet points they'll use to sell hardware.

So funny but most likely true

The accounts will still be backed by Bank cards. Apple will want there cut on every transaction. I doubt they will manage 30% on this deal.

It won't be anywhere close to 30% It wouldn't be economical for retailers. They'd tell Apple to go F themselves and their payment system!

Quite a few places here don't accept American Express because the fees are too high.

Apple's not doing anything with iCloud? Seriously?

Yes, Please.
Touch ID seems like it'd be a no brainer for a payment service.

actually i could just place a plastic/sticky like transparent sticker and you can press thumb to it...and i'll just your thumbprint and make me money!
