I view hardware buttons as a luxury on an all touch device, it's the directness they give. Removing it would feel like a cheap cost reduction step to me.
Not me. Love to not have any buttons on the front, especially if they can get reduce the bezel.

Problem is that is this does happen it will not be until iPhone 7 or 8 following Apples redesign pattern.

well, about once every two, three weeks my screen becomes unresponsive due to an app that's misbehaving or a bug that hasn't been fixed in iOS or for whatever reason. so to do away with a hard-restart option does not seem like a great idea. maybe a on/off button-volume button hard restart option would have to be instituted instead.
Great point, that none of the replies here have addressed. There would certainly still need to be a physical reset button (on the side edge if the front became all screen)

Reduce bezel size is a plus, on the down side you have to dedicate a part of the screen to do the same thing, how do you make sure it doesn't interfere with the application you are currently using? More arcane gestures? No please.. having a dedicated button solves this perfectly. Another issue is that software can lock up and become unresponsive or lag, a hardware button overrides this and is always available.

Did anyone happen to see *WHO* is reporting this? "Digitimes" I think they have only gotten one thing half right in anything they have ever reported so , no, don't put any validity into this rumor people!

Yes, as always, we are aware that this is a rumor, on the site called Macrumors. We are all discussing this (as with many reports on this site) knowing full well it's possible it wont happen. But it's fun to dicuss the therories and possibilities of Apples next moves - thats the essence of what makes this site fun to visit.

And yet.. time and again, someone feels compelled to point out 'ya know, this is only a rumor'. Well, duh.

They can always move the home button to the side of the phone, easier to access when holding the phone anyway.

Hey guys we still need physical switch to power on devices. And we still use physical device to support our power grid. :p

Whatever, removing home button could, not be a great move, according to previous posts.

I don't think I'd mind. Every since getting my iPhone 6 I've wished I could just tap (not press) the home button to close an app and double tap to access the app switcher instead of "reachability."

Now they have force touch, this makes sense.

I hated the buttons which were touch only on other phones. You'd rest your thumb below the screen and accidentally activate one.

Good. It's the mechanical buttons, specifically the home button, that are failing on our iPodTouch/iPhone devices. I turn on the assistive function to switch the home button onto the screen to get around this. Just eliminating the mechanical button would be ideal.

Force touch.

Urgh. I hate software buttons for these kind of uses. Samsung Galaxies are the worst for it. Can't even hold the phone without it triggering the back button all the time, it's awful.

iPhone's have it pretty much perfect with the balance of software/hardware buttons and switches. Physical home button all the way for me.

I think you missed my point.

Could be another step closer to a water proof iPhone. I'm all for less bezel too. Then a 7+ iPhone can fit in your pocket like the iPhone 6 did but with a 5.5 inch screen. Would be perfect!

I like my home button. Anytime I have to help someone with their Android device, I can't get over how terrible a virtual home button is.

In 8 years, the home button has been a steady input and control mechanism. It's about the only component whose location and basic function has remained the same in that time. Sure, it has a lot more functionality now, but it's still at the bottom and it still takes you to the home screen as well as walking the phone. It's also easily located by touch. I don't want to hunt around for a virtual button.

I hope that the home button will stay on the iOS devices forever. The home button with this shiny ring around it looks so beautiful and classy and makes the iPhone an iPhone. iPhones would look ugly without it. Plus, I can't tolerate using those capacitive or on screen buttons.
