What AI feature is Apple missing?

Telling you how good you are? Writing a good paper for school when you have no clue about the topic? Making a PowerPoint presentation for your boss? Getting Siri to discuss your life choices for consumption of whatever?

I think LLMs are getting to a place where scaling into future innovation is getting more challenging, as the algorithms around training and supporting infrastructure code - like agents are starting to get better, though they're all turning into a real product now, measuring engagement against cost and eventually looking for profit.

I think Apple is building for a sustainable future where personalized models are baked into the apps you use and run on the devices you own, that'll be fully context aware and completely private. I like this approach better than having to share 24/7 screenshots with a 3rd party AI to get to know context while its never going to have enough training data and/or context size just for you.

Apple has bad AI, Meta hires from Apple. So what is the result?

More people that say they "know AI" get hired? If poaching from a "bad" company suddenly makes you smart, there are issues. Net result... Lots of bogus AI.
EVERYBODY has bad AI.

And it's NOT going to get better. It ALL hallucinates, LLMs are NEVER going to be better than a flat earther on a good day, and they're mostly going to be about flat earther on a a bad day level.

Is the money bubble going to pop? Yes. Is it going to be soon? I don't know, I certainly hope so, we need to put this idiocy behind us, and by 'us' I mean humanity.

“Siri, add two minutes to the timer”
Siri: “how long do you want to set it for?”

Or… Siri: “done” *changes timer to 2 minutes*

Or… Siri: “done” *creates additional timer for 2 minutes”

Any of the above, but never actually just adds two minutes to the current timer.

Let it be Apple. Let it be. Use other companies LLM models. Let them continue burning through billions of dollars. This is all going to crash and burn and Apple could get what it wants for pennies on the dollars.

Either way there is nothing that Apple needs that it cannot buy from these other's companies. All the major AI companies are burning through money and need any paying customers it can get to help with their efforts without going under. No one is making money on AI, and getting desperate like Meta has become make it doubly so. Let the morons on Wall Street talk. Remember the lying and trouble Apple got into the last time they panicked chasing AI? Not worth it.

There is "winner takes all" race to AGI. That's nonsense. The sooner everyone realizes this the better.
You’re probably right, but if you’re not…

Apple always relied on its perceived prestige to recruit and retain employees. Other Big Tech companies offer better compensation packages.

Re that engineer, Meta are spending millions on one person, and if whatever AI strategy fails with Meta, atleast the guy knows he's made millions..win win for him regardless. There is no guarantee that his ideas alone is going to compete with the big AI guns out there..Meta is just throwing money around at this point to see what sticks.coz..you know..money to burn and make headlines..

Yes it’s possible, but if Meta gets there from spending high dollars to get the top AI researchers and comes up with a drastically different/better approach, it’s very likely the industry will jump on the bandwagon.

Deepseek surprised the industry even with the ban on high-end GPU’s. The same will happen with whatever method works best. No one should be surprised.

Apple is one of the most cash rich companies in the world - i've no idea why they haven't just splashed out on purchasing Anthropic at this point.

Do that - change the privacy policy to match your own and wrap it in macOS and iOS from top to bottom to do anything the user could possibly think of.

iOS can continue to use the on board model for most basic tasks too - as it needs someway to do things offline.
The problem with this is with Apple's privacy first mindset and promises they will quickly be behind the competitors again that train their models off of privacy. Apple is in a very bad situation.

If you can't get the next generation of Siri to work, do the next best thing by sabotaging your competitors by giving them your so called experts :).

Mark Zuckerberg is a desperate person. Everything he doesn't have he wants desperately and he can't stop himself. Facebook and Instagram both suck now. And eventually AI is going to be everywhere and all the people that didn't act now are going to be using the same open source AI platforms for free that Mark's spending several billion dollars on.

Considering the state of Apple's AI efforts, it's hard to gauge whether losing high-level members of their team is actually a bad thing or not.
Right? This is one area where Apple obviously needs a leadership change. If it happens naturally, all the better.

What is ahead of Apple in terms of use for humans? Google is miserable at finding old articles with the AI. It's trivial to get ludicrous answers from Chat.
The reasoning models like o3 have become pretty good. And Siri is a really far cry from what agentic models are capable of nowadays. I'm generally leaning AI-sceptic, but LLMs have come a surprisingly long way since even just a year ago.

I don’t know if AI is truly the future but if it is, Apple’s mind-boggling slow and lacklustre response could be a major turning point in Silicon Valley.

If it is, Apple’s fumble will be discussed for years.

I don’t blame the guy a bit for taking life altering money.

Tens of millions of dollars is no small thing.

Every single person reading this would also say yes.
