I think the biggest reason Apple is losing iPhone customers is because people who want to switch to a low-cost network (Sprint or T-Mobile) are forced to switch to Android.

Do you think Apple is losing iPhone sales due to this ridiculously long wait for a new model?

If anything Apple is gaining customers for precisely this reason. Why would you shell out top dollar for the latest Android phone knowing that it will be nearly obsolete in six months and receive virtually no OEM/carrier support thereafter. The appeal of the iPhone is a unified platform that will enjoy years of legacy support from Apple.

Apple has gained a customer in me in the last couple of months. Replaced both my BlackBerry products with an iPad 2 and an iPhone 4. After 7 years with BlackBerry moving to iOS was refreshing change that let's me do far more than BBOS does.

As far as Android goes, I have a few friends that have gone that route and like it. I've tried it and it didn't appeal to me. I guess that's the lovely thing about having choices.

Everything runs in cycles. People are buying android because it is the "cool" thing to have now. People get a new phone, are all excited, and then after a few months it just becomes another device. And then they realize they will have that phone for 2 years. And when that contract is within 6 months of it's expiration, they really start complaining how crappy that phone is, even though 12 to 18 months earlier they were bragging how great the phone was. And so it shall be with the SG2, HTC, iPhone and so on, depending on which one you have.

Sorry, but over 15 million Android phones a month? Pardon me for one moment ...

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Googling around for Android sales, we find roughly...

5 million - Samsung
4 million - ZTE
4 million - HTC
2 million - LG
1 million - Huawei
1 million - Motorola
===============
17+ million per month (560K a day)

(These numbers are the average per month predicted for all of 2011. Less early, more later in year.)

As long as Apple is selling enough devices to turn significant profit, the sales of Android could matter less to them. The iPhone will continue so sell as hot cakes for a very long time.

I'm willing to bet 50% of those people who switched to an Android after owning an iPhone 4 will buy the iPhone 5. I've seen it happen one too many times with the iPhone 3GS/iPhone 4.

I'm sure Apple is losing customers. Truth is, the general public does not wait for a cellphone to come out. They just go to the store and buy one. In fact, I bet the general public doesn't even know a new iPhone is coming out in September/October.

Really? You think thats how they feel? LOL.......and what is stopping them from buying a phone in 6 months or a year? You think they will wait for two years? Do you wait two years? Most sign a two year contract KNOWING they are going to get the next iPhone so why would you even say that? Many in here have two phones(Android & iPhone), some more than that.

I have a year left on my contract and was told today the Galaxy S2 is coming to T-Mobile in Sept. You think im going to wait another year? If so, them your delusional but you never know, maybe by then a better Android phone will be announced and i dont have any issues with my Vibrant and COULD wait if i wanted since i have it customized to my liking being Rooted. Does more than a jailbroken iPhone when it wasnt rooted and there are now 250,000 apps in the market so your whole post is weak speculation on your part.

You know what else? I still have my 2G...which is in mint condition and i know it is an old phone but it is still a smart phone and can make calls and such but now i cant log into Facebook or my email with it because ...i guess because it is old(had to fire it up today because my Wifes screen went out on her phone). Not really sure why. Cant use my email on my iPod anymore either.

And then when the new iPhone is announced, you'll see longer lines than we've probably seen for an iPhone due to the extra wait and subsequent media scrutiny this year which will be followed by the endless complaints about having to wait 3-4 weeks because because demand far exceeds the supply.

Tell me the last time that happened for ANY other phone over the past few years. Give you a hint, there were 4 of them....

The office where I worke used to have 4 folks with iPhones. Two of them went Android because of larger screens, specs, etc. and I've been tempted myself. Not a large sample, but a trend. Also, the entire company went with a crappy droid pro rather than iphone for their company phones. That's 300+ sales that could have went iPhone.

No i think they are losing out because the iPhone is too expensive. That's why your company is getting lots of Droid phones, because Android is relatively much cheaper.

I think Apple realizes this, and is probably working on a cheaper iPhone. Also, the iPhone 3GS was knocked down to $9 at AT&T, so it could be a foreshadowing.

No.

People buy Android because they can't have iPhone. In the past this was only speculation, but new Verizon sales data shows it to be reality by the unprecedented Android customers that have upgraded to the iPhone.
Sprint/Nextel and T-Mobile don't even carry iPhone so there's an automatic 35% smartphone market share given to Android. Even then, that didn't stop the reported 1 million unlocked iPhone users that t-Mobile recently announced.

People buy Android because they're cheap.
McDonald's sells more coffee than Starbucks- It's .99c, 8oz and it sucks. Who has more market share? Case and point. I could stop here, but I'll keep going.

It takes Motorola, Samsung, HTC, Sony & LG combined to outsell the iPhone. You might read about how Android outsells the iPhone, but it's just Google marketing hype BS. How does software outsell a hardware? It can't. The Android software runs on more than a dozen Phones, where as IOS is only on iPhone. Android simply operates on more phones and nothing more. No matter how you measure it, iPhone is still the #1 selling smartphone and don't you forget it.

Despite Google and fanbot claims, Android actually lost market share last quarter. Surprise surprise. Analyst Charlie Wolf blamed Android's market dip on sales of the Verizon iPhone 4- adding even more evidence to my opening statement that people buy Android because they can't have iPhone- which is further reinforced by Verizon's announcement that they have over 32% of iPhone 4 market share.

You're right about one thing, there were long lines for 4 past iPhones, but not the last one. I'll give you a hint; the carrier it was sold on started with a V. That said, lines prove nothing. They are mainly based on whether whether or not Apple allows pre-orders or not. And, if HTC decided to sell one phone per year, released on a particular day, I'm sure it's lines would be around the corner two. It's all a function of how you market your product.

The true test of popularity, rather than loyalty, is to know how many in these lines are new iPhone customers. While Apple still makes a load of cash, iPhone popularity doesn't grow if people are just replacing there old iPhone after a year.

Dude,

You need to take a chill pill. I guarantee, most people do NOT buy a phone every year. Very few people spend $600 every year on a smart phone. You may think so, but then you are the delusional one. Get over yourself.

Apple sells a $49 iPhone. How cheap do you want a phone to be?

...and don't you forget it.

Man, you showed him!

Sorry but simply not true. The iPhone 4 (for AT&T) did allow preorders and the crushing demand essentially overloaded Apple's servers the entire day, with many people not able to get through at all. I was lucky enough to get an online order through and have it delivered the day before the retail launch--went to my local Apple store that morning and the line was 500+ strong. Pretty much the same scenario every iPhone launch.

And yes, no lines for Verizon iPhone launch but I believe it was the best selling device at Big Red regardless.

And, if HTC decided to sell one phone per year, released on a particular day, I'm sure it's lines would be around the corner two. It's all a function of how you market your product.

I seriously doubt it. I'd bet a pretty good portion of HTC device owners don't even know who HTC is or that they make their device (at least in the US where every carrier often rebrands the phone). If it was simply marketing, why the hell wouldn't HTC spend some more bucks 'marketing' their phones so that they might have some 'lines' (i.e. demand). ANY company would kill to have the results Apple does for their iPhone launches and to deny this is simply ignorance.

The true test of popularity, rather than loyalty, is to know how many in these lines are new iPhone customers. While Apple still makes a load of cash, iPhone popularity doesn't grow if people are just replacing there old iPhone after a year.

Absolutely agree, but the exact same thing can be said for Android and I'd guess that a pretty significant portion of those Android sales are from existing Android customers as well.

iPhone 3GS and 4 could be free but Android would still outsell them. Why? Because they have a ton of choices which is exactly what apple needs to do.

Chill? I dont need to chill. Im not upset. Just rebutting your claims. I know few people who keep their phone for two years. Some do, sure. Seems most in here sell off their iPhone just so they can have some money to buy the newer one every year. So tell me, do you buy the new iPhone every year?

I wont wait another year and it wont cost me $600 either to get another one.

I have no intention of selling my iphone. I keep my phones for the duration of contract. BTW, this is my first iphone. It's a good phone, a good reason to keep for duration of contract. Perhaps most HERE do sell their iphones. The majority of those outside of this forum likely do not. So even if someone were to sell their iphone for $400 after the next iphone comes, they still will have to pay another $200 to $300 for a new iphone every year. I would again say MOST people will not spend $200 to $300 every year for a new phone. Just consider how many are still using the iphone 3 and 3gs they got when they first came out, and you will see that MOST did not replace their iphone every year. In fact, there are likely more of those models still in use than iphone 4's sold by AT&T and Verizon combined.
