I'm confused ... is Apple Lossless on Apple Music now available? If so, can anybody give me an example of a lossless album so I can see the lossless logo?

This played from ipad mini 5.

Check your music settings and see if you have the lossless options in there:

I see it now. Thanks so much!

Can I play lossless on Windows? (web player or iTunes for Windows)

Also, what would I need to connect my iPhone to my existing dac for lossless? (I already have a dac/amplifier on my desk for my headphones)

seems like a waste to even try this in my usage case... I'd be better off with the music taking up less space on my device.

from apples support page on lossless... "While the difference between AAC and lossless audio is virtually indistinguishable, we’re offering Apple Music subscribers the option to access music in lossless audio compression."

Maybe you missed this part of that document:

“However, Bluetooth connections aren't lossless.”

So yeah, wired connection needed.
Believe me I’ve been reading up and down all the apple articles about their lossless support, still trying to find the one that mentions why the songs stop playing after 15 seconds on headphones but will play normally on the built in Iphone speaker.

I just had to re download my entire music library until to get stuck with that problem LOl

How cool would it be if Apple played everyone and there was no difference at all other than the logos showing up?

From Eddy Cue (and he's right):

“The reality of lossless is: if you take 100 people and you take a stereo song in lossless and you take a song that’s been in Apple Music that’s compressed, I don’t know if it’s 99 or 98 can’t tell the difference.” Cue revealed that he has regularly done blind tests with the Apple Music team, and they confirm how rare it is for anyone to be able to consistently recognize lossless audio. “You can tell somebody, ‘Oh, you’re listening to a lossless [song],’ and they tell you, ‘Oh, wow. That sounds incredible.’ They’re just saying it because you told them it’s lossless and it sounds like the right thing to say, but you just can’t tell.”

That's weird. Hasn't happened to me yet.

The 256kbps AAC does sound good. I'm more interested in the Hi-Res Lossless than just CD lossless. There's a psychological element to lossless, hi-res audio audio as well, but that doesn't make its effect on someone any less real.

Well, I finally took the time to set up Apple Music for lossless using my Asgard 3 amplifier with built in TrueMulitbit DAC card. I will say I am enjoying it. If there is a way to filter for only lossless music I would love to learn how to do that.

I've pretty much ignored Apple Music unless in my car, or using mobile devices. At home, at the desk I've spent a lot of time with Tidal. Actually I do regret not keeping my Apple Music play lists up-to-date.

Is anyone out there thinking about switching to Apple Lossless and killing Tidal? I'm thinking it might be a little to soon to do that.

Oh man..

This new feature is going to bring in all the silliness that infects the Audiophile area on reddit

People will start hearing things they swear they've never heard before and discussing endless combos of placebo differences between DACs and their "Schiit Stacks"

The music will now have "wider sound stage" and "more air" and "texture, detail and warmth"

The "game will be changed forever" .... "can't go back"....and "everything non lossless now sounds awful"

Seriously, I use lossless with a lot of Schiit (and other audio equipment at home). But, I still enjoy BT headphones while mobile.

To each his/her own. Enjoy music anyway you can get it:)

Then why do they offer lossless??? I think they know lossless fans will be a small part of their users. Fair enough. Maybe this is just another area in which they want to rule. First Tile, now Tidal.

I feel ya'

We all have to take our own route

I went all in - deep down the rabbit hole - many years ago and became so much happier when I simplified it all down, got rid of all the clutter and "gear" that I was CONVINCED was making everything better...

...and now I just listen to music anywhere and on anything --- for the music

It's always the music for me and I realized the obsession about gear and specs was simply getting in the way of that.

Sorry for being off-topic but what’s wrong with the audiophile crowd?! Why are they calling some of themselves idiotphiles? They would fight for cables, even USB & Ethernet! And MQA…don’t let them getting started on that, argh!!

Seriously what is wrong with these people?

Seriously what is wrong with these people?

You sort of have to go down the road yourself to fully understand it.

It's like getting sucked into a cult somewhat.

Usually it starts with upgrading something simple (like just getting decent headphones) that provides a fairly tangible difference in quality of the experience (but even this will be largely about "different" vs "much better")..

...and the research into what to upgrade next to make it "even better" gets going.

And before you know it you're spending hundreds (or thousands) on DACs & Stax & Planars, etc all to tease out that next little edge of barely perceptible "better"....and the further you go the more diminishing the returns.

My biggest takeaway after all my adventures was just that my body and ears **vastly** prefer listening to speakers instead of headphones. And you don't have spend a mint on speakers to get a great experience. Additionally, I've confirmed - hundreds of times now - that my ears can't tell the difference between most anything once I'm above 256. I keep my library as lossless, but mainly for future proofing my options.

Done.
Enjoy the music.

:)

Yes. I went that road. Bought my first system (KEF Q700 & Rotel RA-12) in 2014. Spent hours on forum , reading about people fighting and fighting and fighting again. I left these forum and just listened to music.

I moved abroad 3 years later and bought a new system (KEF R300 & Teac AI-503). Before buying this one I went back to the forum. No innovation, just the same discussions over & over. If I move place again I’ll avoid these forum or I’ll spend a few days to know what’s new.

What a waste of time & energy. So much anger and bitterness, very few really genuine to help navigate in this world full of snake oils. (A term I learned on Roon forum).
