I for one prefer to use Apple’s trade in for the convenience of having the trade in value refunded back to my debit or credit card the same day. In the past, I have traded my device into my carrier with no issues, and have considered that for the 17 series in the fall, if I do not preorder through Apple this year.

My $455 trade-in value iPhone 14 Pro Max looks and works as good as I need in a phone. Not getting rid of it till it breaks.

The increased values were never great. Trading in with Apple is easy and convenient but will always get a lower value than selling to a 3rd party.

The "offer" was 10-20$ more?Wow, Apple should be careful to not going bankrupt. Why do people use these trade-ins anyway? they're absolute rip-offs.

Convenience and dependability, plus my time has more value than jockeying around Craigslist or elsewhere.

Even Apple's trade in partners can be sus. They've "lost" 2 of my Apple trade ins and had to wait several months to get it resolved. I now only do trade in at the Apple store.

As expected, Apple lowered its iPhone trade-in values in the U.S. and select other countries today, following the end of a limited-time promotion that ran through June 18.

How do people trade in their phones for these values when they are using and need their phones until the new phones are available? Do they offer a longer waiting period for this promotion to trade in your current phone?

I don’t trade in my device until almost the last day for trade in and I am sure that I want to keep the new device and am happy with it. I always take my trade in to the Apple Store and either have the trade in refunded to the card I used to buy the new device, or I have it put onto an Apple gift card.

That's what I have done...but by then the offer to buy your phone through Apple will drop. My question was directed to those who are selling their phones to Apple to maximize the $ they get and what they do for phones until the new ones come out later this year?

Most people probably have a pare device lying around that they use until the new device launches and then trade in the old device. I’ve done that before and it was a little painful at first but I got used to it over time.

As someone whose sold on eBay and other places, sometimes its a lot less of a hassle to trade in to Apple than risk selling it yourself. Recently put an old iPad on Swappa, and sell went well, but it got to the destination and essentially has been "delayed" for 10+ days, essentially I consider it lost. Ended up having to refund the buyer and lost $200.
Yes, agree that sometimes, especially when you've been burned a few times by scammy buyers, the convenience of the Apple trade-in is worth the lower price... and I would also say the trade-in value "discount" can be more or less depending on the device (eg. iPhone vs iPad vs Mac) vs the then-current secondary market value. Depending on the device, sometimes the secondary value is very low even on Ebay/Swappa, that the "lower price" direct from Apple is nearly identical, especially if you pay Ebay / PayPal / Shipping fees, etc.

On top of it all, all the silly rules the platforms have. Swappa wants pictures at all angles, but if you're an "enterprise" seller you can sell devices without any photos of the actual device. If you sell on Reddit's hardware swap, they have their own set of rules and are ban happy.
I've noticed this too - and find it very annoying. Kind of defeats the purpose of Swappa. Seeing the actual device for used electronics is such a HUGE part of buying on the secondary market. Condition, scratches, battery health... while I understand the rationale that maybe for some big "enterprise sellers", it's an extra hassle to take individual photos when you have a lot of a single device... I think it was a mistake on Swapper's part to allow this.
