They're allowed to charge whatever they want - it's a free market. If you'll pay it, they'll charge it.
Wow! People actually try to justify those crazy prices!
If you don't like their repair fee, maybe someone else will repair it for less. If not, there's likely a business opportunity available.
Thank god apple provides parts for 3rd party repair shops. /s

Also of note, they lowered the price to repair the Air 2 from $379 to $299.

Still way too much.

-shrug- completely unphased by this. We are talking an electronic device. If it can go 2 months it can go 20 years. Warranty service for defects beyond a year are so infrequent as to be a complete non-concern to me. I also think extended warranties are a waste of money for this same reason. If I smash the watch or crack the crystal, who's fault is that? I'd expect to pay a hefty sum for a fix or replacement (smart watch, mechanical watch, car, garage door, whatever). People get wrapped around the axle on the silliest things.

Personally, I am not arguing taking responsibility to have things fixed.
But I think Apple has made a change to push AppleCare.

It shouldn't cost $379 to repair an Air 2 broken screen.
Why do they charge that? Because they don't fix it, the basically are forcing you to buy a refurb at refurb prices.
How about charging me $179 to fix my screen by Apple, not some youbreakitwefleece company.
Give me back the same iPad.

To me, Apple Care by any other name is 'extended warranty.' Apple sure has done a good job selling the image of well engineered equipment (I agree) AS WELL AS the wisdom of buying an extended warranty. In my mind, the two don't mesh. That's like a huge number of people literally giving Apple (or Best Buy, or Samsung, or Maytag etc) free money for what are most likely infrequent needs. It's no wonder you can't buy anything today without getting hit with the follow on - "for an extra $2 we'll give you CD replacement coverage for when your CD goes bad!"
Like I said, no skin off my nose, I never buy the extras. Those who do should shop around. BTW, I had two iPad screens get smashed. I checked ebay and sure enough some guy replaced them both for maybe $100. Of course not all components may not be as easily fixable. So always check around.

$2800 for the gold edition that has the exact same internals as the cheapest model? While also not eligible for repair if broken into pieces (i.e. the golden shell isn't even part of the problem)?? In what universe does this make even the slightest sense?

I agree. Think about it, even if they give you a refurbished watch, they've put essentially the same internals from the $299 watch inside a gold case, probably worth less than $1200. And they can take the gold case they replaced and melt it down to realize 100% of the value of the gold. So the customers pays $2800 to get, let's say $1500 worth of refurbished watch, and Apple gets another $1200 from recycling the gold in your old watch. So Apple just made $2500 on that transaction.

Frankly for $10-17K/watch, Apple Care + really ought to be included with the watch as a minimum 3 year warranty.
