be funny if google told him he can't WFH
Apple fails heavily. Tim and his gang still think that they can control people. But today, when you are good in what you are doing, you have all the power. Simply because everybody wants to give you a Job. So when Apple gave him the finger, he just returned it and Apple lost one of its top engineers.

So Apple needs to change in many ways and Tim is not the one to start this process.

Why is everyone wishing the worse for him? People come and go, found a better fit. Great! The fact that Apple has to be changing their back to work policies does not make them look any better. Apple will
always be mediocre on some things and that includes AR and AI.
No kidding. Some of these replies act like they were a victim of this leading ML researcher.

Yikes

If you think it's easy to replace software engineers that are at the Staff level then you're way off base. Apple lost out on someone great over a stupid policy other high level tech companies aren't enforcing. And they'll continue to lose talent. I made a similar move after my company wanted to return to office and ended up at a better place with significant pay raise and working with my teams remotely is problem free.
I work with Google and they have the same 3 days a week in the office policy as Apple, and their quality of work has deteriorated greatly… and it’s not just Google. Anyone who says WFH isn’t affecting productivity clearly hasn’t worked with enough people or have teams/agencies reporting to them. There are always exceptions but for the most part, I feel like half of corporate America (and Europe) is on an extended vacation.

Honestly, I'm not sure why people are upset. It isn't anyone else's business but his. It is called freedom.

It was really surprising to me the number of people that were bothered by this in the other thread. I honestly think it's just jealously that they don't have the same options.

It's the only thing that makes sense to me. Otherwise, it's a little neurotic to care what choices a stranger makes regarding his life and career.

Even pre-pandemic, people didn't always come into the office (at least at my workplace); nothing really changed.

We have a huge campus, people sometimes work out of different buildings depending on their agenda for that day. Needing to see your coworkers face to face is a sign that you need your hand held to get anything done imo.

I think there are a lot of managers who like to breathe on the neck of others, set up meetings about the next meetings and actual pajamas wearing work from home people over here that are projecting too much. Mix it with a pinch of jealousy and frustration about not being able to do the same and you get these irrational reactions.

A lot of people work already not in the office… a lot of multidisciplinary teams have like one person in South America, another dev in India, another one in France, many cities all over North America, etc. The working hours barely overlap for a lot of them, eons before the virus pandemic craze… and nobody bat an eye then.

Now what? Are we going to force people to work from a single city in a single office at a single work schedule? I don’t get what’s going on nor where it ends.

Good! Has anyone experienced Apple's AI recently? It's a mess! Apple doesn't need more top research scientists. What Apple needs is more entrepreneurs. Bring back the era of Steve Jobs!
I got a lot of crap for saying this in the last thread where he announced he was leaving but used Siri as my initial example. I’ll double down and say Siri has gotten worse since he started at Apple (coincidentally during the peak of work from home) and like you say, I also mentioned the rest of the AI in Apple devices has become equally worthless.

Maybe he was an embedded Google spy ?
