Close, but no cigar. McIntosh is the abbreviation for MacIntosh. Read any standard dictionary. You will find that Mc is alphabetized as Mac. This means that McIntosh is listed before Mbutu. When the Macintosh was under development, the discussion was not about Macintosh vs. McIntosh. It was about Macintosh vs. MacIntosh. In other words, Apple chose to use a lower case letter i rather than upper case. The letter a was not a part of the controversy.

I read iCon. You can tell the author about your discovery.

I can hardly believe that Apple changing it's name to Macintosh was a serious suggestion on this forum.

Branding isn't that confusing come on.

Apple was around for almost ten years before the Macintosh.

Think of all the computers and devices Apple made that were not Macs.

Apple I
Apple II
Apple III
Lisa
Newton
Pippen
iPod
PowerCD
eMate
That one Network Server thing.

I'm sure I forgot some...

Stevie

I can swer Steve referred to the 'Macintosh' in one of his most recent keynotes...

I don't think the name is dead

Just to be clear, I am not suggesting a name change, just noting that some people I know (more than 10) are confused by it, and was wondering if market share would rise if the naming was different. That's all.

Yeah, I hear people saying things like "When is Macintosh going to come out with a new iBook"

I always correct them.

PS - yay my 100th post!

Just think--without that decision we would have IMacs and IPods and ILife!

Mackintosh raincoats?
McIntosh Labs audio equipment?
MAC cosmetics?
Mack trucks?
Freddie Mac home loans?

Time was, every Macintosh had "Macintosh" in the name.

Apple Macintosh IIx
Apple Macintosh Quadra 800
Apple Macintosh PowerBook Duo 2300c
Apple Power Macintosh 8100/100 A/V
(Longest Apple product name, by syllables, ever.)

Shortly after Steve Jobs took over, the iMac became the first machine that ran the Mac OS, but didn't have "Macintosh" in its name. The iBook was the first that didn't even have "Mac" in the name. Around the same time, the Apple Macintosh PowerBook G3 series became the Apple PowerBook G3 series.

Now, Steve says that Apple wants to have "Mac" in the name of all of its Macintosh products.

There's also this…

Actually, several years ago, before I really knew, I thought that Apple had changed it's name to Macintosh. That was, however, in grade school.

I have some friends that like Apple stuff but think the two names are confusing. One actually thought that Macintosh made computers while Apple made iPods and software.

Do you think they would ever simplify the name issue? Based on some of my friends (and even some coworkers) I think people would actually switch faster if it didn't confuse them. I think its a petty reason not to switch, but they get gunshy because they do cost more than windows PCs and just assume everything is the same, just pay more for more confusion. Thoughts?

exactly. it's exciting.

Well it seems to me that if Apple wants to reap the halo effect from purchases of the Shuffle, Nano and iPods, they may need to start mentioning the fact that they are also the makers of the wonderful iMac, Mac mini, PowerMac, MacBook Pro, iBook G4, and PowerBook G4 computers. Sometimes you just can't take it for granted that everyone knows about the rest of your business.

I think people know Apple makes the Mac. Their are a few out there that don't know, but it is up to us to educate them!

Everytime I see the MAC (speaking of the cosmetic company) I get really excited. Then I see that is for make-up and get angry. Guess I should pay attention more

Every time I see the MAC ads, I get excited, and then realize it's socially inappropriate for me to wear makeup. :(

Every time I see MAC ads.... i know immidiately that its not for a Macintosh, since they use a totally different font, capitalize all three letters, and usually have some girl wearing makeup.

Ugh.. I hate people saying Mac makes the iPod, or something like that. It's like saying "Yes.. PSP makes the Walkman"
