I got a new phone (not an iphone) but forgot my gmail account password since it's been so long since I set it up. So I reset the gmail password, but now apple mail doesn't recognize the account because the password has been changed, but there is no way to change the gmail password in apple mail.

I tried sending myself a new email and a dialog box pooped up stating that I had to reset my gmail password for apple mail in my browser. Safari opened up and there was a dialog box where I had to enter my gmail email account. I entered the gmail account and clicked next, BUT NOTHING HAPPENED! SAFARI KEEPS TAKING ME BACK TO THE SAME DIALOG BOX TO ENTER MY GMAIL ACCOUNT!

Reading suggested options, I deleted my existing gmail account from apple mail and tried "adding" my gmail account, but it takes me back to the same dam safari page to enter my gmail account info where doing so just takes me back to the same dialog box to enter my gmail account!

As I stated in the heading, apple mail is a royal PITA! Why can't I just enter my gmail password under the apple mail account, like in Outlook?

Reading other posts this seems to be an on-going issue with apple mail.

Here's a screenshot of the safari dialog box that opens. I've entered my email account and this is what I get after clicking next - NOTHING!

BTW, I'm NOT a macrumors "newbie" as I've been using macrumors for 7-8 years - at least and have been using macs for at least 15 years.

Have you tried to log into gmail from safari? Also that last time I had this issue (changed gmail password), I just deleted the gmail account from Apple Mail, then recreated it.

Gmail and Outlook365/exchange are always changing and improving security, adding more complex login procedures, keys, phone challenge, two factor authentication... As result, Apple Mail seems to have issues which drive me nuts. Most of the time now it looks like Mail will trigger web page which lets users log in and so there really never is any "password" stored in Mail itself. Also, depending on your gmail account setting you may need to create device specific password or whatever. Complicated.
Tough to blame (only) Apple, I suspect there is bit of rivalry between Google and Microsoft and Apple involved. Most issues can be solved by (annoying) process of deleting account from Apple mail and recreating it. I strongly recommend that route, even though I have had some success before triggering password replacement. Do not remember how, though.

I know you said you're not a newbie, but are you using an app-specific password for Mail? I'm a multi-decade Mac user as well, but still forgot I was using that setting in Google, so when I decided I was done with Outlook and Postbox and would give Apple Mail a shot, setting up my Gmail account in Mail was a hassle because I kept getting rejected when I tried to input my regular Google password.
