Yep... I guess we got the problem on my computer nailed on. But it comes and goes, the problem is not there constantly. Hope they can sort this out in the next update.
i jsut came back from holidays (which ended in a 8d hospital stay so i wasnt happy in the first place) and i cannot attach anything to mails i try to send. i'm really really desperate, nothing seems to wrok.
i am using both gmail and my departmental email address via mail and i can send normal emails just fine. but if i try to attach something it just sends and sends and sends and sends and nothing happens. also once there is an email with an attachment in the outbox, all the normal emails go nowhere as well.
i have also tried the online version of gmail and the same happens - my ibook cant upload the attachment....it tries and tries and tries but again nothing.
im really worried and my ibook is also older than 1 year, so i would really appreciate it if someone here had an idea.
btw im using the built in ethernet to connect and have never had any problems with the ethernet......just in case.i also dont have parallels installed....
By process of elimination, I've found that the Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 4 is the cause. I have reproduced this problem several times and my Mail is currently stable, so I am confident that this update is the problem.
If your Mail is crashing when you try to open an email with an attachment or attach a file to an outgoing email, this is what I did to correct it.
1) Boot from the Mac OSX Leopard Upgrade DVD and re-install OS X. Don't erase your drive (!) just choose to install a new OS (the old one will be moved to the Previous Systems folder. This will reinstall Mail.
2) Use Software Update to install all subsequent upgrades EXCEPT Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 4. When you see it on the list, just 'uncheck' the box.
You might want to change the preferences for Software Update - go to Software Update > Preferences > Scheduled Check and uncheck 'Download important updates automatically'.
3) Repeat 2 as needed. Hopefully Apple will figure this out for future updates.
Hey everyone,
Something wierd happened a few days ago. All of a sudden, whenever I try to add an attachment to a message, either by dragging a file or by using the attach button, Mail pinwheels and I have to force Quit it.
Any ideas? How do I reinstall it? I have all the disks and everything...but can I reinstall just one program? Will it still keep all my settings and all that?
I solved the problem for my situation, which sounds like yours, too. You cannot attach a file to a blank e-mail; something, even one character, must be typed in the body of the e-mail for the file to attach. Either this must be done, or you may go to Edit➛Attachments in Apple Mail and uncheck the "Always Insert Attachments at End of Message" box (then a file will attach to a blank e-mail - I had a difficult time unchecking the box, though). I hope this helps.
