Since the release of iOS 15 in 2021, Apple Maps has been rolling out a more detailed map with custom-designed 3D landmarks in major cities around the world. This week, both the more detailed map and cycling directions went live in Paris.

Apple says the updated experience provides richer detail for road markings, buildings, commercial districts, land cover, trees, elevation, public transit routes, and more. Turn-by-turn navigation is also improved with augmented reality walking directions in Paris, as well as the addition of cycling directions along bike lanes and bike-friendly roads.

Notably, this means the world-famous Eiffel Tower can now be viewed in 3D in Apple Maps, along with the Louvre museum and other landmarks.

More detailed mapping is also available in Atlanta, Berlin, Boston, Chicago, Las Vegas, London, Los Angeles, Melbourne, Miami, Montréal, New York, Philadelphia, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Sydney, Toronto, Washington D.C., and a few other cities.

Earlier this year, we highlighted an iPhone app called Landmarks that allows you to easily view hundreds of 3D models from Apple Maps.

I will never understand why Apple maps is so bad outside the US, even when the map and transit data are available through an official API from the state, Apple still won’t support it. Apple’s worst app by far.
Interesting, do you have an example where it’s not supporting authoritative data sources? I know the EV charging in the US uses PlugShare data which simios just wall plug so unreliable to say the least. I do prefer Maps but it’s rollout is so hit and miss, miss and miss…

Yeah something tells me measures of humanities wellbeing are a bit more relevant than using how much a company's free service visually depicts landmarks in an enticing cartoon style - ..

I'm not sure if you're referring just to your specific area as "outside the US", but here in Canada, Apple Maps is excellent, as it is in many countries.

There was a time when I confused about why Apple was entering the Map/Navigation industry. It wasn't clear how they could bring value to a market dominated by Google and much older market leaders. But that has all changed. Apple Maps is superior to Google Maps in many ways, and they continue to add excellent value.

In Northern Ireland it's not too bad. The only thing it really suffers from is lack of volume of users keeping it up to date by reporting things like permanent store closures, or precise pin positions. Sometimes when I'm bored I'll go on and do some for fun, then like 2 weeks later I'll get a notification to say they fixed it.

There's a large health centre complex here, with 4 different separate GP practices on each side and other services on different levels. Their team had no idea as I fixed the pin positions and left a note explaining this. They kept one pin on the building outline, then moved the other to tiny little on street units along the road... Not good.

But if you can find an address on there (search isn't as good as Google) it's competent enough to get you there. It's usually that the place you want to go returns no results or it shows you the wrong one in my experience

Apple Maps is pretty much unusable in many parts of the world. I was in Latin America, Africa, and Thailand not long ago and it was pretty much useless. Even in NYC, it couldn’t take me to a well established residential address in Tribeca, right off of Broadway!

You’d think 10+ years would be enough time for Apple to catch up to Google, but without Steve Jobs, and Eddie Cue on permanent semi-vacation (yet somehow getting paid millions), I guess there’s no motivation on that team other than to do the bare minimum. Seriously, where is the $25+ BILLION in R&D going every year??

Sadly, Apple Maps is trash. Google Maps is unfortunately the last google piece of software I still need to rely on.

You’re describing exactly what’s wrong with Apple Maps. Apple expects people to fix it as it doesn’t care.

Their report a problem function is futile and utterly useless! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve reported the issue/problem, for months or even years, and it would not be fixed! They must have a team of less than 10 working in their department.

Need street view. I have no idea of why I’ve seen the Apple car doing street view pictures in Portland and Corvallis YEARS ago but no street view to date. :/
Street view is definitely in Portland although I can’t see if it’s 100% of the metro area. Don’t know about Corvallis.

Do you think Google don’t rely on corrections from their users or business owners? The difference is that most people rely more on Google Maps and therefore makes sure the data there is up to date.

Not saying Google aren’t better to automate a lot of this but they also get a lot more help to correct problems.

I’ve used Apple Maps without any issues in both Africa and Latin America.
