In most of European locations I frequent Apple Maps is now equal or better than Google Maps, especially where public transport is concerned. Google is getting pretty bad in that regard.

And Apple actually fixes broken / missing things if you report them.
That’s not really my experience. Not even in London, which had DCE first in Europe. The problem is largely the far superior POI database Google has, including reviews. Given that 9 out of 10 times that’s what I and most people use maps for, it matters.

As for getting from point A to a known point B Apple does a decent job, unless you’re cycling of course. But so does Google maps, with cycling directions.

I’m going to a friends place across town on a bike later today. Cant use Apple Maps.

Do you think Google don’t rely on corrections from their users or business owners? The difference is that most people rely more on Google Maps and therefore makes sure the data there is up to date.

Not saying Google aren’t better to automate a lot of this but they also get a lot more help to correct problems.
My experience with Apple Maps corrections is terrible, noticed two shops marked at the wrong spot in my town. Took one to update like 2 months? If not more? And I think I had to submit it twice ?
The second one and this one is the more funny one… there was a gas station 150/200m down the road instead of where it’s marked.. reported it. Didn’t get corrected. Reported again. They came back after ages and they just removed the gas station altogether…. Submitted that now there’s a gas station missing and lo and behold it’s still in review. (Just went and double checked… so it doesn’t show up in the search but if I zoom in… it now just shows the station at its old location and “permanently closed” description…. Just how?)
There’s also the fact that sometimes Apple Maps decides to give you the back entrance to a place … or if a shop or place is at the end of a dead end road (like a fence or something) and there’s a road behind it.. it will tell you to just drive to behind the fence.. sometimes adding 5-10mins to your journey if it’s some awkward place….
So while I love Apple Maps.. the look, the way Siri announces turns/etc (google could learn instead of telling you “TURN NOW” and you just look as you drive past your turn since you had to slow down and all in advance…. Saying stuff like “go past these lights and turn right” etc is way more helpful) when doing navigation have to make sure it found the correct place for the address and it’s not taking you down some back road… Same with lookup , looks way better than street view but unfortunately it’s still wildly limited in places you can look, where as on street view 99/100 you know you can see it. And let’s not mention cycling directions which seem to exist only in very very specific cities ? Cause I have yet to get cycling directions? And in general sometimes I wish I could see both travel times for different modes at the same time so I can compare if I really need to drive or could just walk or take a bus or something. Waypoints for walking would also help especially since sometimes it takes you down roads you know you don’t want to go etc.

To sum it all up: yes overall if you make sure it’s giving you the correct stuff it’s a lovely app, it’s just that you unfortunately still have to double check if it’s correct, and some features just have arbitrary limitations

I'm not sure if you're referring just to your specific area as "outside the US", but here in Canada, Apple Maps is excellent, as it is in many countries.

There was a time when I confused about why Apple was entering the Map/Navigation industry. It wasn't clear how they could bring value to a market dominated by Google and much older market leaders. But that has all changed. Apple Maps is superior to Google Maps in many ways, and they continue to add excellent value.
In Germany it’s pretty bad behind the shiny front. Outdated locations, closed stores if any at all. Sometimes it’s just 20% of the stores or doctors that you can see in Google maps. Plus walking and biking directions are very bad. Navigation for small Vespa scooters is non existent as you can’t filter fast roads. Closed roads or car accidents don’t show up. New roads take years to show up. The only good thing about Apple Maps is street view.

You’re describing exactly what’s wrong with Apple Maps. Apple expects people to fix it as it doesn’t care.
It’s people who contribute to Google Maps that keep it so accurate too though. Apple aren’t any less dedicated. The difference is, nearly all businesses of all sizes advertise on Google so are incentivised as part of that to ensure up to date business info which translates to up to date and complete info and changes on the maps.

I suppose it’s small business owners who don’t make the effort to keep their info up to date. Anytime there’s a road blockage or construction work etc, Apple have it on there

Yeah your one country that’s next to the USA means the world. Sure.

It took Apple years to fix the misspelled name of my street in a big German city! Two, maybe three years and dozens of reports. I have the feeling there is just one person working at Apple Maps for whole Europe.

They simply don’t care.

Who cares about fancy 3D graphics and specialized features? Apple needs to catch up with Google on basic navigation and traffic. I'm in Southern California, Apple's backyard. Apple Maps routinely sends me on illogical routes from my house. For one of my regular destinations, Apple has me driving five miles on rugged hiking trails. After all, it's the shortest distance.

Google is upping their game every day, and Apple is adding silly gimmicks to a flawed system.

Indeed, I also use Apple Maps (99,9% of the time) in France, Germany, Belgium and in the Netherlands. Public transportations advice/live info works often much better than local dedicated apps. Corrections of broken links/missing places/ closed horecas' are also very quickly applied.

As said elsewhere, it truly is a pity that the cycling routes are not available (especially in the Netherlands where the cycling infrastructure is extremely well developed).

Need street view. I have no idea of why I’ve seen the Apple car doing street view pictures in Portland and Corvallis YEARS ago but no street view to date. :/
Have you tried clicking on the binoculars in the bottom left corner of the Portland map? It's showing street view (full screen or not).

It took about 2 weeks for Apple to fix the actual location of “Valley of the Rogue Park” in Oregon. Which impressed me.
