Thanks.

During my testing, I noticed alerts for service changes and holiday service, so it does seem that Apple provides appropriate notices if necessary — not sure about delays or cancellations in particular though.

In terms of data sources for transit info in the UK, Apple has yet to update its acknowledgments page beyond London, where data is apparently provided by "ITO World Ltd." See: http://gspe21.ls.apple.com/html/attribution-44.html

Yup, delays included:

I drive, but it thought I'd give it a try considering I'm in town a good 10 miles from home. It looks amazing! A 10 min walk to the bus stop, told me which bus to get, all times seem correct, and then told me how long the walk back to my house would be. This is great and very very useful. Would have loved this during my student days.

I mean Apple maps in general needs a huge usability update. Recently I put in some directions and it told me to go to a similar named road 6000 miles away so that wasn't good.

Unfortunately Apple maps is pretty dumb in that regard. I'm living in f**** London and putting in Waterloo as my destination does take me to Waterloo in Australia or Canada sometimes. It annoys the hell out of me.. very often it will suggest locations or roads which are years away rather than choosing the closest one.

The Netherlands next Apple? We're not that big of a country, Google already had transit for years here..

Yes, but your patience will be rewarded as Apple has deliberately not chosen to simply turn on all the transit feeds at once like Google did and end up with buggy inaccurate transit info. This link is the best explanation of how Apple's method is different and better and why it will take longer. It should be shared widely

Why do you say London, England when you have already referred to the UK? Do you think that your readers will get this London confused with say, London, Ontario?
Then later the article goes on to mention a number of towns and cities without mentioning the country where they are located?
Please be consistent. We don't talk about New York and say, New York, New York.
Key words for google searches probably.

just looked up a route to my friends the other side of the country. It has everything. Routes, rail companies, underground's, connection times, the stops each section makes and the times my train will be at each stop on that route.

Excellent job

Hah, reminds me when I was in visiting London maybe 2 years ago. I was slap bang in the middle of Oxford Circus (I think its called) and I used Apple Maps to find a HMV. All it did was show me where the HMV headquarters was. Google Maps was much more helpful but a much more awkward interface. That was a while ago though. I hope things have improved for both of them.

My goal is to be asP.S. For what it's worth, I'm Canadian. I do in fact live a few hours away from London, Ontario by car. Thanks for the feedback!
Why did you give us the time by car, are transit details not available in your area yet? ;p

Technically the title should be "Apple Maps Expands Transit Directions Across Great Britain" (Wales, Scotland and England). The United Kingdom also includes Northern Ireland in addition to the three countries contained within Great Britain. Interesting to see further expansion of apple maps however.

It's still beyond me why Apple entered the 'maps' market; Google maps is at least 10 years ahead.

The reasons are well chronicled on the web for you to search for and read and include Google deliberately hobbling the Apple version of GM. It also includes the fact that mapping is seminal to much of Apple's strategic vision. As you read and research you'll learn how laughably far from reality your statement is.

Indeed, Apple has caught up with GM in most areas of consequence, though not all, and surpassed GM in others, such as interface and privacy, as evidenced by the fact that Apple Maps now is preferred exponentially more often by Apple users than is Google Maps. That despite GM having a many years head start and Apple Maps having to grow from scratch and a disastrously poor start.

Yes, even though GM is a free 30 second download Apple Maps now is used well over 5 Billion times a week!

Apple should kill this service. Its been 4 years since they announced it and its not even near as good as Google maps...and I hate Google!

Southern Rail directions would just be to take a car.
"Arriva Trains Wales regrets that the 1400 service from Swansea to Fishguard is delayed due to sheep on the line. There will be a replacement bus service but due to delays there will be no connection to the 1430 Stena Line ferry 1430 ferry from Fishguard to Rosslare. Please talk to any Stena representative for a free transfer to the 0230 ferry..."

The amount of times that happened to me...

Though I am kinda surprised that they don't include the Trans-cymru bus service seeing all the times are in one PDF and that would cover the whole of Wales.

What's really laughable is you drinking all the koolaid said in wwdc, and believing half-stats as the gospel. Data can say whatever story you want it to say, and Apple mastered the art of data and stats PR. One of the reasons why Apple 'leads' Google on iOS is the fact that it is default application, and there's no way to change that. So most people who can't be bothered to copy and paste addresses end up using it as soon as they click an address.

I like Apple hardware BUT their software whilst secure leaves much to be desired.
Whilst I am pleased that finally they have public transport for the UK to say they are in the same league as GM is somewhat of a stretch (we British like to understate).

1)Missing Street Names or roads on maps. I find this quite frequently - my guess 3-4% of time Apple does not have a street I want to go to whilst GM does.

2) Wrong street numbering. When Apple does get you to the street it sometimes does not get you to the right place in the street. My guess 2-3% with sometimes the error a significant distance.

3) Lack of many business locations. Whilst Apple may now allow businesses to add themselves many do not. I think most people use maps to find businesses whether retail or other. I admit here that it does not have the false positives of Google where sometime GM takes you to registered addresses or home addresses of directors because this is the address of the person paying the listings fees

4) be very very afraid when Apple Maps says it has found a quicker route - the last time I said yes to this in France it took me off the Autoroutes for the rest of the day adding much time and also making what was a long journey anyway much more stressful.

Why do I care? In the past I had my phone in a cradle stuck to the window and used Google Maps. I since bought a car with CarPlay and could not bring myself to ignore this and still use the cradle for navigation so am now stuck with Apple Maps. ☹️
To answer someone else's point Maps public transport times do not seem to be real time however it does show operators advisories - which may be specific but are more often general comments.

BTW why does it show the date as Jan 8th 2012 when I input this reply on January 11th 2017?

Around here, Quebec, Google has no advantage over Apple except in locating businesses (because well, it's their main business after all).
