Try setting the temperature units to C in language settings, and then set the distance units to miles in Maps settings.

I must be going straight past something - but I cannot see a way of changing units within Maps settings.

I believe that’s the same reason why Apple’s other services are so janky. e.g. - iCloud.com. Apple sells hardware, first and foremost. And it shows. That’s where most of the focus goes.

And Google sells advertising first and foremost. And it shows.

They were referring to Settings > General > Language & Region > and I think this is where they meant Measurement System rather than Temperature. Hope that helps.

I get the options Metric, US and UK. But none of them give me everything I want!

I think you mean Google is a software company first, and it shows. It is in their best financial interest to make the best software they can, so that you’ll use their services… so that they can gather data on you, yes. Their software is killer.

Apple cares about selling you new devices. That’s priority #1. Not services. And it shows. Considering that Apple has been expanding their services revenue year over year, they have some slack to catch up on if they want to be competitive.

I clearly prefer Apple Maps over Google Maps or Wayz for driving directions because of one feature - Apple Maps tells you when to turn by referencing signals and stop signs, rather than tell you how may feet until you turn (e.g., Apple Maps - go past this stop sign and turn right at the next signal; Google Maps/Wayz - turn right in 1000 feet)

Admittedly, Apple Maps navigation is not as refined, and I do still use Google Maps for location information, but having GPS "accuracy" does me no good when I don't understand when to turn

C'mon guys! Yes, I love most Apple products too but Maps and Siri SUCK big time. Google works much better than Siri, 100%! Google Maps is way better than Apple Maps. You need to give the credit when it's due.

I like the design of Apple maps but I don't like the accuracy. When it pulls you off a highway, just to put you back on the highway at the same exit. You know it is all f'd up. I use Waze.

Hey Google is better for asking for factoids but Siri works for the basic stuff I need it to do like timers, alarms, reminders, light switches, and playing music.

I would love to use it and I have been in the past, but unfortunately here in Hungary the voice is just sooo un-Hungarian that it drives me up the wall. It gets worse when I go abroad, because it announces eg. Austrian street names as it is written, like a kid. Oh and we still don't have bike navigation.

Ooops. i just hit the top right icon in apple maps and there is satellite view 🙂 haha i bet i get shouted at now for replying to myself but I'm old so i don't care

Actually I was right first time around.
Google & Apple Maps have a satellite view BUT ONLY google maps lets you use a satellite view whilst driving a route.
Shame really as I bet its easy enough to implement.

I use Apple Maps all the time until I have to drive into the USA or do a major trip. The real time driving data and even things like gas prices are pretty darn handy and more reliable.

I definitely find Apple Maps on par or superior to Google Maps, and I have switched to it 95% of the time. I wish you could turn off the turn-by-turn navigation being mirrored on your watch when using Apple Maps in CarPlay. It doesn't make much sense to me.

Edit: Just found that there is a way to turn off the turn-by-turn notifications on the watch when using CarPlay:

Apple maps has improved over the years. I still run into situations where i have to go to google maps to find an address apple for wrong. I never had the reverse happen

If you're talking the USA, Apple Maps has pretty much caught up with Google Maps. But I prefer Waze if I drive in areas with variable levels of traffic because I get reporting on traffic jams a lot faster than anything else.

Despite the fact I love the look of Apple Maps, I only use Google Maps&Waze.
Apple Maps in my country is so unreliable, small cities dont even have street names, some of them are even missing completely and so on.

Apple Maps has a thing about not naming islands. It makes it more than a bit difficult to follow along the island hopping strategy in WWII.

Apple Maps has been better for years and it can be summed up real easily.

Apple Maps “Go through this light and turn right at the next light.”

Google Maps “Turn right in 800 feet.”

It’s also better in cities where one way streets are prevalent. If your destination is on one, but near a corner, Google will dump you at the corner because it’s a shorter time. Apple will actually take you down the one way and stop you in front of it. Huge difference.

Now… if I could only get an option in the Tesla to select the mapping system instead of needing a phone mount.

I think there’s a way of using Waze via a URL…

waze has so many more reports of speed traps and stalled vehicles than google maps — even though they are supposed to share data. i'd say for every 5 reports on waze, google maps only had one to show.

This is exactly what keeps me on Waze.

I love the look of AM on my car’s huge CarPlay screen, but the live reporting feature is still lacking.

I guess it wouldn’t be, if more people used it…

I think it’s also why Siri is so poor in relation to Alexa, Bing and Google smart assistants.

Nowhere near as much is done off device so data is quite limited.
