Wrong street names spelling in my area that had not been corrected since the introduction of Apple Maps. I have written countless times and still no update. Wrong routes for bikes in my area with no way to contact Apple. Just two examples. When people wanna see me at my place for the first time I ask them not to use Apple Maps since it shows a different address.
Didnt realise that was the case. Thanks for sharing!

Last month I had my inbuilt sat nav completely freeze up on me, luckily I had my phone to hand and CarPlay came to the rescue.

Apple maps have come a long way, the POI is getting better and place locations are more accurate. I could use it as a viable system now.
The biggest problem is Siri. If anything through IOS the speech recognition and word use have gotten worse, especially with CarPlay.

I personally never use Apple maps when it was launched, but I don’t think it’s that bad now.

My experience is that if you use "report an issue" in Apple Maps for a POI issue, they'll address the issue within 48 hours and even send you a notification. But if you report a street-related issue, it never gets fixed. My guess is that Apple simply forwards these reports to TomTom who provides the maps. And apparently they don't care. When roads change, it takes 12-18 months in my country (Belgium) before it's reflected in the maps.

I hope Apple move other map feature to in house like POI more.

They’ve fast to fix POI details when I’ve reported it.

And I hope they also let people review and submit photo directly to their maps, no just rely on 3rd party info.

Bingo, same for France. Meantime Waze will have it right within weeks. How do Waze folks mange, I wonder? Ok, they are with Google now, but they were having way more accurate data compared to Maps before the acquisition too.

Simple: they have a huge user community that updates the roads immediately. You can even do it yourself using the editor. And if you submit an update that is incorrect, it will be reported by somebody else. Genius.

Apple on the other hand relies on TomTom and I guess they only release updated maps to Apple every 6-12 months, like they do for their own customers.

Do you have any examples which can be replicated?
I have no issues with Apple Maps, but would be open to seeing these flaws everyone keeps talking about, i presume they can be replicated since it's so awful...

I don’t think it’s useless, it’s actually a nice app in London, just can’t compete with google and all their data. Especially outside of the US and big cities.

I have used Apple Maps in the US, Europe, South-Africa, ... and had the same experience everywhere. The maps are quite complete (although not the quickest to update in case of changes and additions), POI are quite good but not as good as Google, traffic jams are very accurrate, but Search is horrible.

But... I also had bad experiences with Google Maps and Waze sending me to wrong places, suggesting very weird routes requiring unnecessary manoeuvres, taking me on private or unpaved roads for shortcuts, etc.

Apple Maps always suggests main roads instead of shortcuts through residential areas to save some theoretical minutes. Only in case of traffic jams it automatically suggest alternatives. I like that a lot.

The major downfall for Apple Maps, besides its horrible search engine, is that it's unaware of local accidents and road works. Waze never lets me down in this regard.

Apple just signed the deal with the wrong company.

TomTom is the principal reason for this course of action.

Apple need to assign an internal team, internal tools and better satellite views.

You’re right, Waze is excellent for accidents and traffic. I’ve used Google vs Apple maps mostly in Asia and I agree, search (definitely),POI and public transport things that set it apart. But yes, the actual maps I’ve never had a problem with.

Sure, this is clear. My question is what prevents Apple from doing the same thing with their Maps? In fact, a Macrumors post from 2013 talks about them patenting exactly this kind of active user feedback. I wonder what happened to it:

Live traffic flow monitoring works very well in my experience, yet the road layout updates are falling well behind the competition.
