Have used Spothero for several years now for finding cheap parking in either NYC or Philly. Saved me a lot of money, especially parking the whole day in NYC. Nice to see this now featured in Maps. Will check it out.

Would be cool if there was a real time parking spot finder for empty spots in the streets supported by webcam and satellite surveillance. I guess we’re still a few years out until we get that.

The key (and kind of confusing to me) point of this feature is that it only works for "8000 locations across the U.S. and Canada." It does not work on addresses, or known locations NOT on the list of 8000.

E.g.: I searched up a local pro sports stadium on the Maps app on my phone, and then after drilling down through the "..." button, I see the option for parking. I clicked on that and got a long list of reservable parking options up to 1 mile away. Ok, that is an objectively useful feature, (which is easily avoided in case you're somehow unhappy with the function being available). However, I then searched up a well-known restaurant right down the street from said stadium, and there was no "parking" option in the "..." menu. Of course, I could easily open the "Spot Hero" website or app and find reservable parking near the restaurant, which indeed includes distance and cost so I can make my decision according to my priorities.

So having the feature to help find a parking garage or lot near a destination is a good thing, but not quite as good when it is only limited to 8000 locations. The confusing part for me is: why is it limited by location? Why not just carry the address (regardless of "popularity") over to the Spot Hero site/app?

Baby steps, I guess? ¯\_( ツ)_/¯
