Apple is "exploring" the idea of showing search ads in the Apple Maps app, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

Back in 2022, Gurman said software engineering was "already underway" to display ads in the Apple Maps app, but Apple did not move forward with the idea at the time. Today, he said Apple is "giving this notion more thought" again.

This time around, he said Apple has yet to start engineering work, so ads in the Apple Maps app might still be a ways away.

Ads in the Apple Maps app would not be the traditional banner ads that you see on websites, but rather paid search results. For example, a fast food chain could pay Apple to appear near the top of the results when a user searches for "burgers" or "fries." Many similar apps already offer search ads, including Google Maps, Waze, and Yelp.

Apple already displays search ads in the App Store, allowing developers to pay to promote their apps to users who search for relevant keywords.

Ads in the Apple Maps app would further boost Apple's services revenue.

Deleted it a few weeks back and moved to Organic Maps, which is entirely offline and actually works anywhere unlike Apple Maps even when there are offline maps.

Can see Apple's recent decisions are basically: start doing the things that differentiated you from everyone else for not doing them.

More excrement.

Nooooooo.
I get enough pop-ups from places like Starbucks, and eateries, that ads in maps would be maddening while I’m driving some place new (to me). They would also be a distraction, and thus would/could become driving hazards. (McDonald’s 500 ft, Wendy’s 300ft on the left, Kroger 1 mile ahead on the right, etc.).

This is what happens when  loses all those juicy Google billions. Suddenly  needs to replace that income with ads! They are shooting themselves in the foot regarding the argument as to why they don’t want to make a search engine. The whole thing makes me feel sick. 🤮🤮🤮

If they start showing ads, I'll switch back to Google Maps.

(I find that Google Maps has better traffic and incident alerts. I still use Google Maps for business reviews, and restaurant menus that have been uploaded by users.)

There's a somewhat explicit term used to describe what is happening to Apple currently, that wouldn't be appropriate for these forums.

Unfortunately when the consumers are all out of milk, that's when the employees of the fruit company will be fired in order to maintain "growth and sustainability"... which is PR speak for "shareholder greed".

Literally the only difference between Apple and Google's business practices is that Apple harvests your data for it's own pockets, where as Google sells it to the benefit of everyone. (for those who don't know, you aren't actually sold, a unique ID with data gathered on your usage habits is sold, which can be reset or disabled any time)
