My town doesn't have the building indicator instead of 3d, so when I go to my address it just says 3d, it just changes the view but it looks the same, is it supposed to do that or has apple not updated the maps for 3d data?

not all cities have flyover yet. in fact, flyover is pretty much reserved for the big cities and not even all of them have it (around 20 have it )

3D doesn't do much in flat residential areas like my neighborhood. But in the mountains nearby it shows the topographical features fairly well.

    upwards of 40 already

3D is more like terrain elevation stuff. Flyover is virtual buildings.

Here's an example of 3D but not flyover
