Apple today announced that its revamped Maps app is rolling out in Finland, Norway, and Sweden.

The new experience provides more detail, improved navigation, custom-designed 3D models of popular landmarks, immersive turn-by-turn walking directions powered by augmented reality, and more.

Look Around, which was first introduced in iOS 13, is also expanding to all of these countries starting today. Look Around provides 3D street-level imagery in cities where it is available, and it is similar to Google's Street View.

Apple users in the above countries received notifications of the rollout this morning, and Apple Maps expert Justin O'Beirne also catalogued the expansion.

This is the seventeenth time that Apple has expanded its new map data since its public launch in September 2018. It has since expanded to the U.K., Ireland, Canada, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, France, Germany, and select other countries and territories.

Ok ”look around” looks actually pretty decent, it’s much better in morphing between photos than street view. Probably some new machine learning model.

Maybe apple maps is becoming useful, the amount of data (restaurants, up to date streets) has been simply inferior before!

I don’t understand why the new Maps has the wrong maximum speeds in Europe.

In Germany, Belgium, Spain and France they are wrong 4 out of 5 times in my experience. It’s really horrific as this can lead to accidents. Imagine driving 120 km/h on a highway near a speed camera and AM saying you can only drive 70.

The reverse is also true. I have been on roads with a limit of 50 but AM thinks you can go 90.

I think Apple simply used image recognition to determine the max speed for each road segment. But speed limits are far more complicated in Europe.

I love how Apple Maps is mocked by influencers of all kind while being consistently better than Google by leaps and bounds (in my area, Northern Italy).

Google sucks, plain wrong sometimes & I dislike their UI.
I also prefer AM but it’s not leaps and bounds better. AM still is horrible at search and business listings are still outdated. If you don’t know the exact address, Google Maps is vastly superior.

I met one of those cars driving around when I drove to Evenes airport, had a chat with the guys driving! That was just a few years ago, cool to see the final product!

You can all visit the lovely Lofoten archipelago and it looks pretty amazing, they have certainly been lucky with the weather when they drove around.

Here Apple Maps can be used for navigation only, but Google Maps itself is a complete ecosystem especially for its ranking system for locations.

Indeed. As a pedestrian and cyclist, Apple Maps have been vastly inferior to Google Maps. I open it up once every six months to check and keep getting disappointed. Not holding my breath, but will check again the next coming days.

Even as a motorist, Apple Maps is horrible. You can be driving 75 mph down the interstate and the view on the map will be a 3 or 4 block radius. It also has a tendency to change your route, despite opting out of its proposed changes as you drive. It's as if the designers never actually used their own product...it's just not helpful at all.

Great all the places I haven't been and probably won't get to go to☹️

I can confirm this for France. The problem is that with frequent roadworks, pollution related limitations, etc. it must be really tricky for Apple to keep up with all the changes. They would literally need to drive across the whole country on a weekly basis to keep it more accurate.

Another way of doing it would be using the automatically generated AI data, same as they use for anonymous traffic analysis. So if Apple gets a constant feedback from all the iPhones in the area travelling at a speed between 85 and 95 km/h, it would be safe to assume that the current speed limit there is 90 km/h, so they could update the speed limit there, if needed.

In my experience right now they are about 70% accurate in my area, so I just turned the speed limits off altogether to avoid any confusion and keep my eye on the road signs. ;)

Denmark have way more iOS market share then all other Europe countries (Monaco and Liechtenstein have more) and more people than Finland and Norway. And almost 10% higher market share compared to Sweden.

But okay we will wait.
The Little Mermaid is sad.

Did you ever go to a place…I think it was called Norway? That was one of mine. Won an award, you know. Lovely crinkly edges. I was most upset to hear of its destruction.

I don’t think it has anything to do with roadworks and dynamic limitations.

They’re just plain wrong, even on long stretches of roads without roadworks or dynamic signs.

It seems the app is mostly wrong when there is no street sign and you need to infer the max speed from the general rules.

For instance, on a type of road where you can normally go 90 but it’s limited to 50 by a sign, the app will show 50. But when you go past a crossing you can go 90 again. That’s not indicated by a sign (you just need to know) and in that case the app will continue to show 50.

Great! So now Maps in CarPlay will look better when I cannot find the place I am looking and I have to bring my phone out to Google for the address, and it will also look better as Maps tries to guide me down one-way streets going the wrong way after taking me on a huge detour.

I honestly cannot understand how Apple haven’t been able to make Maps usable in all this time, but then again they seem to be putting their efforts into stuff like this instead.

CarPlay in general is one of the reasons why I’m eyeing Android now, I cannot believe it is made by Apple.

I welcome this as a Swede of course - and I actively choose to use AM instead of GM even though GM usually is a bit better in some regards. But I try to use as few Google services as possible, and that trumps the little difference there is.
