I am sure there is an incredible amount of effort required to pull maps off, but 4.5 years to “roll out” a new design?
And still not “roll out” the equivalent content even here in the USA… even in California whole segments are just missing the increased data and there’s still no way to report road speed errors. Another Apple hobby hobbled…

I totally get what you are saying, but the technological advances that take place in a 5 year period can be incredible. Apple is not a startup, yet it’s as if their team is moving state to state to get this completed. By the time they’ve finished, competitors could have leapfrogged them.
How do you map the world without mapping everything state by state?

Do you know if they also improved public transportation like buses and MRT with the new updates to the Taiwan maps?
There will most likely be some transit improvements once the maps are released for everyone (whenever that is). I don't really use transit all that much so I can't really tell lol.

how do you know they are testing the new map for HK? does it include "Look Around" and "Flyover"?

btw, i found the saved guides and reported reviews were all lost under my account name after i upgraded the IOS to 16.4.1. do you guys have the same issues? it is normal?
I first saw the new maps of Taiwan from Justin O'Beirne, and from there, I checked to see if I got them on my devices. Turns out, I got them on my Mac. I later saw on Reddit that Hong Kong and Slovakia were in testing, and I somehow missed them when I was looking around the map. One quick way to tell is if there is a lot more orange on the map (this is purple in Dark Mode), which shows commercial corridors. You should also see more detailed buildings and 3D buildings in places that haven't had them before.

On a side note, Look Around is generally not available until the maps are launched for everyone (the only exception to this is the US in different stages). Japan is complicated, but it also has Look Around without Apple's in-house map data. The same is true here; no Look Around yet, and no Flyover either.

Well in my mind, I picture a team of 9 people moving around doing this activity instead of 1000 teams of 9 doing it all over the world. The "roll out" period gives me this impression.

The public transit part of Apple Maps in Taiwan was already updated a long time ago, and works the same as other countries.

What other updates to it are you looking for?

Great to hear they are rolling out the new map to Taiwan.

How about its neighbour Hong Kong, in which the data collection had been done sometime in 2021.

While apple staffs are busy with stacking up the new map data, please spare some time to add one fix which is common and useful.

Please add an option in Map app setting to allow language different from the system setting. This option is available for almost all apps!

The current option for switching on off English labels could not help. The display Lang for navigation and nearby attractions is still sticking to the system Lang setting!
I had raised this multi-language issue on Maps long back.
I sense that they had removed the language settings from Maps on purpose, because almost all the other apps can do that.
And Maps are very sensitive in terms of national security, so there might be a regulatory requirement to comply.

There is a setting in Apple Maps to either show the map in the local language, or in the language of your phone.

No, there is not.

Only an option for switching the language of the map labels, not the lang of App UI and the other info, e.g nearby attractions.

Attached the screenshot.

The language of the app UI is the same as your other apps, which is the phone language. Why would you want different apps to be in different languages?
Not true. For most of the others apps, the users could choose the Lang of app UI different from the phone setting. Please refer to the attached screenshot of the Notes App setting.

In Apple Map app, the user could *only* change the Lang of the map labels, not the UI (info associated with the searches location)

Verified.
No, Everybody knows this toggle, thanks for trying but you did not really understand the question.

Let me give you an example:

Conditions:
1. People living in greater China (Taiwan, Hong Kong as this thread title)
2. Their iPhone Language: English (for whatever reason e.g. want to learn English? Expats? but the reasons should not concern you)

Goal:
They want the stock Maps.app language as in nothing but all Chinese. ( the local language makes more sense on maps when you live there, especially when you know the language.)

Now please go ahead and verify. Please remember not to change any condition.

So they want the map labels to be in Chinese, phone OS UI to be in English, yet the Maps UI in Chinese instead of English?

That is a very specific use case. Don't think that will happen.

Many apps in Settings have a “Preferred language”-setting. Podcasts and many 3rd party apps too. iPhone can tell an app what language to operate in if the app supports it. Maps does not support preferred language setting but if it did, you could do what the other person asked for.

I wish we could get offline maps.
I have limited need for satnav - often using it so it is ready if I have to divert for some reason, warn of traffic, etc.

Today, I went to a very nice cafe - which is at the end of a nest of winding roads with lots of turns and few signs. I've been there before so not entirely unfamiliar. But too easy to make a mistake and add several miles.

Using my phone, I got there with no problem at all. (The voice and timings of alerts - including on my newly acquired watch - were spot on.) Had our tea and a walk. Ready to leave. Choose route... Then realised that I couldn't even find where we were! Insufficient 3G/4G signal to get anything. No wifi. Just a blank grid pattern. It hadn't even cached the last few yards of the trip.

Took a few guesses, then partner's phone started to work - she's on a different network - but mine still dead.

Keep wondering, if I had made the journey a trip home to home via cafe, would it have worked any better?

Realistically, I don't need to be able to navigate across the entire country - all offline. Just enough to get from where I actually am back to somewhere with network!

Most stock apps except the Maps.app, and third party apps (if the dev ever utilized the API) have a preferred language option. So now if you read back to my first reply and the other guy's, you'll understand where we are coming from.

not specific use case!

while the phone lang remains english, ppl prefer the map to show local lang (or the other lang while travelling) for *both* the labels and map UI.

part from the map labels, pls note there are location related suggestions shown in map app,e.g. nearby restaurants, attractions, which would follow the map UI lang setting.

tks for your understanding...

any possible reasons why apple insists not to include a per app lang setting for map app, just like most of the other apps?
