One thing that's a bit strange is how many traffic lights are missing.
In Los Angeles area (so one of the first covered by the new maps) I'd guess maybe 5% or so of traffic lights are not present. It doesn't seem like a big deal (since we din't have them last year) but once you get used to them it's jarring every time the map doesn't show them.

I'm not sure what's going on with this. I think they need the video-scraping AI to go over all footage a second time, being especially careful to look for anything traffic-light like at EVERY intersection.
(Or they could require us to go through a "which square has traffic lights" CAPTCHA to log in to any Apple Service! )

I gotta say where Apple has Look Around it’s way better than Street View. Problem is Street View is all over and Look Around is not.

Agreed. I use Street View constantly and am really looking forward to this coverage expanding.

Because I don't like using anything Google related.

Ditto, valid reason.

It's far superior but I think it will take ages for it to roll out to the majority of the US, hell, might never actually happen for the rest of the world.

Here in my corner of the Southeast, they're pretty equal. Google does have building outlines, but Apple should have that by the end of the year.

Apple Maps viability is certainly a regional to local experience however, in my experience all across South Carolina it is very poor. Missing numerous POI information, roads, etc.

I don't think I'll see the day when Apple Maps catches Google Maps. Google's underlying database far surpasses any database Apple could have or attain as Google has had years and years to perfect.

I don't like Google maps because it has a female voice. I can change Siri to a male voice. I do not like the sexist stereotype that people in helping professions have to be female. A male voice has a lower pitch and easier for me to hear.

Why do you have to claim that "sexist stereotype that people in helping professions have to be female"?
If Google defaulted to a male voice you could equally well complain that "in a sexist society people will only take directions from a man"...

That's what happens when you go out of your way to be outraged. No matter what choices anyone or any group of people make, you'll find a way to be unhappy about them.

There is no such thing as a final version of a product, especially when it is software. All products are either constantly being updated or discontinued. As long as Apple exists and people use GPS, Apple will continue to update Apple Maps, and if they cover the whole world, that would give them the bragging rights they treasure so much!

At the pace they are going now, it wouldn't surprise me if they cover Antarctica by Thursday.

It is nice that Apple is making these updates but at the same time Google Maps is so far ahead that I don't see any reason to use Apple Maps other then perhaps some loyalty to Apple as a company. I don't especially like Google but fundamentally the job of a map it to get me where I am going and Google does that.

And Apple Maps does exactly that. As someone who extensively compared both in CarPlay before the new Map Data and after I can say they are closer than most think for navigational/traffic uses. 9/10 times the routes suggested were identical and the few times they differed either route would work. Coming out of DC during rush hour gives you multiple options with similar travel times. Add in Siri, Calendar with Location Notifications, Messages, etc there are plenty of reasons to use Apple Maps.

People who make the "Google is so far ahead" loose all credibility because they are not often not basing it on real world use.

I submit POI information and road information to both Apple Maps and Google Maps. IF Google Maps is superior in South Carolina, it's most likely (partially) because more people submit information to Google than to Apple, Yelp, TomTom, etc.

There are some things I have trouble getting connected on Apple, and there are some things I have trouble getting corrected on Google. I prefer Apple Maps here, but I use Google Maps as a backup.

Apple has maps?

On a serious note, I gave up on Apple Maps years ago and have such a stigma against it that I don’t even consider using it at all. I primarily drive with Waze and I use Google Maps for all reference work. I honestly don’t think I have even opened Apple Maps in over 3 years, maybe more.

Obviously depends on area but Apple vs Google...not even close as you can see below for where I live. And google had street view here in 2010. Apple...who knows....

Noticed it this morning here in Colorado. Even the small town I live in has 3D maps now.

It is based on research that female voices are perceived more trustworthy. The fact that some people may prefer a male voice does not make it a "stereotype," and it's not a stereotype to state a fact that is generally true for a group of people (e.g., stating that men have deeper voices than women).

It might be worth your time to research what the word stereotype means before using it in a sentence.

Definitely seeing enhanced Maps in the Denver/Boulder area .. but no 'Look Around' yet :(

As of yesterday, Apple Maps is still giving me incorrect directions where both Waze and Google Maps are correct. There is a freeway intersection near my house where Apple Maps insists that I need to head west one exit, make a u-turn at the next offramp, and THEN go east. Both Google Maps and Waze have me just take the eastbound freeway entrance. I’ve reported this issue over a dozen times...and it is a medium traffic (not rural, not 2 huge freeways intersecting) intersection. This simple problem does not inspire faith that their product will function properly in areas I do not know...View attachment 878038

Have had similar issues. Had one this past week on my trip to Charlotte NC. Apple routed me to some warehouse instead of the building I was trying to go to, which was 2 block prior. I had to open Google Maps to find it. Area was a business park so it wasn't easily located with all the buildings. Another instance was when Apple Maps wanted me to make a u turn to get to the other side of the road, even though there was an intersection and I could go left.... ?? There have been a few of these weird occurrences. It will have me get off the expressway only to have me get back on again. Thankfully I know and ignore it. However it areas I am not familiar with, this would be annoying and it has happened.

One of the many things I don't like about Apple Maps. Even though I use it solely (not a Google user), it's detail is lacking and it doesn't have the clarity that Google Maps has. I don't care how much time they have spent on it, how detailed it is now, it's still not up to par. As seen by these screenshots. I can't see street names, if they are one way, etc. It's just sad really.

They were making a political statement. Because outrage is so important to some people they need to discover reasons for it.

The screenshots he posted show street names.

Also, the one-way street next to my workplace correctly shows up as a one-way street on Apple Maps.

I love my Apple Maps. Very rarely do I ever use Google Maps. Sometimes an app will take me to Google Maps and I simply go with the flow.

Florida will be absolutely last I believe. They are already so far behind in Florida with missing intersections, exit ramps etc.
Perhaps they are waiting for Florida to be underwater

Still not as good or as reliable as Google Maps. I asked Siri for directions to a restaurant 3 miles away... It pulled up Apple Map directions for a restaurant 51 miles away.
That wouldn’t be a map problem per se but a point of interest issue. Best solution is to either use the address or take a picture of the establishment and report it as a missing POI.

No it doesn’t. Same as mine. You have to zoom in pretty far to see them. It’s annoying. No buildings, no side roads, walkways. Nothing.

Like, where the hell is the entrance to Kroger? Which side? Same for the mall. Where are these stores located in relation to the entrances? How can I know that without a damn building? You know how I know? I check Google maps. I am a die hard Apple fan too.

I've seen the Apple Maps camera cars in the Toronto area several times earlier this year. I'm hoping that the expansion outside the US will happen earlier in 2020 rather than later.

We've had the updated Maps in Vancouver for a while now. Or maybe I'm mistaken by the upgrade with the Lane Guidance feature (which I can't live without in the big city!)? Maybe the re-rendered maps are even better than they are now? That would be incredible.
